Build more houses.

Recruit more Gardaí.

Clean Dublin city centre especially around Henry Street.

But they’re a bunch of idiots so who knows what they’ll do with it.

They could be close to self sufficient in clean energy for that, lots of renewables with no ongoing fuel costs, give everyone a massive discount on their energy bills!

Oh for god's sake. Get a grip.

Just curious that Ireland really doesn't want it, apparently. Odd.

You need to understand the history of - it isn't about Ireland not wanting the tax.

Ireland used tax, or lack of it, to entice large companies, esp tech, and have succeeded. They allowed companies to pay their tax overseas if decisions were made overseas. Companies flocked there and the EU didn't like it, they want to maintain control.

Being gentle, I don't really need to understand any history to know that if a country can't find a use for £13 billion, then there is something fucked in the world today.

Or, to put it another way, because I do understand the history: when things like this happen, the natural world order has been so perverted, it cannot last.

They’ll probably spend it on consultants deciding how to spend it! 😂😂😂

To be fair the issue was how much they might lose in economic growth and jobs by undermining an incredibly success strategy that saw Ireland go from a poor European country to a wealthy European country over a generation.
A one off 13 billion doesn’t replace that if it goes.

What should they do with it? Capital spending on houses and infrastructure.

Or it would build a lot of bike shelters…..

feelsbadouthere · 10/09/2024 15:16

Ireland didn't want it because they stand to lose
more when companies that came for the tax advantage leave.

hairbearbunches · 10/09/2024 15:47

I've heard on the grapevine they have a very close neighbour who are up the creek without a paddle right now and this neighbour has resorted to giving its old people a kicking to try and save some money. So they could be neighbourly and give them some 😀

Peridot1 · 10/09/2024 16:05

I get the background of why they aren’t spending it but if they were to it should go partly towards the health service and also to a programme of building social housing like was done in the 50s.

In fact a social housing building programme in conjunction with education/apprentice programmes to also train young people in trades and give them a wage and a future.

And a bike shed for said consultants to lock up their bikes :)

That money has be 'resting in an account' for some time and the interest alone would get the National Children's Hospital past the finish line I'd hope.

Here are some genuine suggestions where the money could be spent (in no particular order)

  • transport (both outside of Dublin and inside - how about getting the Metro to finally go to the Airport and the Fing-luas to Finglas and other areas for example)
  • health (pay the doctors & nurses well and invest in the Health Service)
  • building a new prison (or two)
  • actually building Local Authority Housing Schemes instead of the PPP that they got themselves into at the start of the Celtic Tiger era
  • Get rid of prefabs as an 'option' for expanding schools and actually build buildings instead
  • Pay teachers better and make education a viable option for students instead of an option that they are trained here and can only afford to work overseas.
That's what I think they should spend it on.
