Sudden feeling of impending doom

Rubydoobydoobydoo · 09/09/2024 20:00

For no apparent reason. I have nothing major going on that merits that sinking feeling. A couple of bills to pay — but I have the money to pay them. No back to school or college or work blues. No health concerns, apart from getting older and stiffer. I had a nice weekend away with friends topped off by a particularly good Sunday lunch in a beautiful old town yesterday. My DP and I went for a walk after saying goodbye to the friends and had one of those lovely, close hours, just happy to be with each other.

Today I've been fine, got things done. And now, just now, out of nowhere, that horrible sinking feeling of impending doom.

Anyone else ever get this? Any ideas why?

I get that right before my period and sometimes immediately after as well!

Dotto · 09/09/2024 20:47

Too much caffeine?!

RaininSummer · 09/09/2024 20:49

I felt like that all day yesterday and blamed it on the weather. Dark and oppressive.

sammyjoanne · 09/09/2024 20:51

Nights are drawing in is one thing. You also have had a fab time meeting up with friends and on a high, and now the feeling has subsided. Have you got other things going on? Family members and their troubles? Other things that need doing and you forgot to do them, such as paying a bill maybe?

TeaGinandFags · 09/09/2024 20:53

If this is a passing one off, put it down to lack of wine in your system.

If this is constant, get thee to a GP for a check up. It could be serious. Then up your vitamins and go for a regular walk; 10 mins should do. You might be falling prey to seasonal affective disorder.

LeontineFrance · 09/09/2024 20:53

It is the bitter sweet farewell to summer. Try to find yourself something creative to do like craft, making something, plan a menu, anything to look forward to.

LuluBlakey1 · 09/09/2024 20:55

I suffer from depression and have phases like this. I did a small painting earlier on tonight and that creativity helped me relax and feel more positive. (It isn't very good but I enjoyed doing it.)

I have not very well controlled anxiety and have a fee different physical and mental triggers.

Hormonal ones are really bad; as a teenager going through puberty I vividly remember googling why was I absolutely fine all day and then suddenly so extremely down in the evening. I also developed panic attacks.

One useful thing I did also discover is that low blood pressure can also cause this. A sense of impending doom, especially in the evening, is a symptom of suddenly dropping blood pressure.

I do also find the nights drawing in produces a melancholy feeling in me at dusk, even though I love the autumn. It’s hard for me to distinguish in the moment, between these physical influences, and genuine emotion sometimes.

I didn’t know it was a sign of heart attack. I’m perimenopausal & get this feeling quite often!

This was helpful. I've been on HRT for a couple of years very successfully, but have recently had to reduce the dose — hence the stiffness and possibly the doom. Thank you.

Embrace it and walk up and down your high street ringing a hand bell and wear a big sign that says THE END OF THE WORLD IS NIGH.

Were it not for the fact that I live down a country lane and there is no one around to notice except sheep, I would definitely do this!

I get this when I'm going to have a migraine.

TerfTalking · 09/09/2024 21:08

Age related anxiety I would say. Since peri menopause I’ve had these feelings, woken up in the night with them and they always come on really bad at this time of year. It’s the sudden change from light mornings and evenings to dark ones.

unsettles me, then it passes.

most of it has gone with menopause, but the end of summer has brought it back temporarily.

My friends say similar.

Scandiviews1 · 09/09/2024 21:08

I always feel like this at this time of year and I reckon it's just a subconcious reflex from it being the start of term and the memory of going back to school. The shadows get longer in the day even if it's sunny and the light is harsher and brighter somehow..can't explain it very well in writing but it always makes me think "uh oh. School". And I left school about 30 years ago.

It's not a constant. I'm not an inappropriately anxious person. I would have mentioned it if I was because then it would all make sense.

In the past when I've had this feeling I think it's been associated with grieving but I have nothing to grieve for. Most of the time I suffer from feeling incredibly lucky. I have the good fortune to find enormous pleasure in small things.

Hate them that dark heavy feeling - mainly used to get them just before falling asleep, haven't had one for ages thank goodness

PontiacFirebird · 09/09/2024 20:26

God I feel like this about 30% of the time! No heart attack yet… but now I have something else to worry about! 😮😶

I'm so sorry to have given you more to worry about.

Weird, I literally had this earlier. I get it quite often, although more like a feeling of despair or hopelessness that passes. I am putting it down to hormones and just my life in general.

Stepawayfromthefridgenow · 09/09/2024 21:17

I get this a fair amount but usually at night. I can go up to bed fine and it’s quite late, get into a nice, cosy bed with Dh and Dd sleeping and suddenly have these awful feelings..I’ll feel
sort of insecure or scared, I get it if I wake in the night too sometimes. I assumed was anxiety or something

Rubydoobydoobydoo · 09/09/2024 21:21

Ah: this may apply to me, too. My BP is on the low side. I just took it and I'm 101/66 (not hugely low for me) so that may be the source of the doom. I'll go and have pint of water. I don't drink much but this weekend we did get through quite a lot. The doom may just be dehydration.

Incakewetrust · 09/09/2024 21:23

It's also a symptom of a panic attack, not just heart attack xxx

Lemonandlime123 · 09/09/2024 21:26

I get this every month at a certain part of my cycle.

Even better. You can practice on the sheep and then build up to humans.

BearSoFair · 09/09/2024 21:29

Can't explain it but I also had it tonight OP, about half an hour ago! Lasted about 10 mins. I didn't know it could be related to low bp, mine is pretty consistently under 90/60 so that's interesting.

I think a lot of people suffer from that thing of waking at 3am catastrophising over something that seems ridiculous in daylight hours. I'm sorry you get this regularly, that can't be easy.

I do have anxious moments and patches, but they've always been for a reason and knowing the reason has made them understandable and therefore not so bad.

Mumteedum · 09/09/2024 21:32

I have an anaphylactic nut allergy and one of the symptoms is a sense of impending doom but it's due to a sudden drop in blood pressure.

I'm also peri/menopausal.

I think anxiety because of hormones is quite a different feeling.
