If you live alone, how do you spend your time?

I'm new to living alone (3 weeks). I have a dog to keep me company, but I find watching TV soooo precarious and boring.
I feel as though I want to do more with my time. It also doesn't help I work from home, so I spend majority of my days in the house, 5 days a week and now the weathers turning, I'm so unsure how to keep myself sane through the dreary weather!

I garden, cycle, go for walks, go to the garden centre/farm shop. I go to the gym during the day so I watch tv or read in the evenings. I'll sometimes meet friends for coffee/drinks at the weekends.

I help run a Brownie group, am a member of the residents panel for the company who owns the lease on my block of flats and enjoy baking.

I find life just whizzes by, work is busy and full on so I can't be bothered to do much in the evenings (some people can't have any down time going by the things mentioned here).

When I lived alone I-

Went to dance class

Yoga

Met with friends

Saw family

Went to the cinema

Read books

Do crosswords

Watch soaps

I worked from home but I also got a job in a pub two nights a week which was very social.

I was never bored. I also made effort to cook from scratch at least 4-5 times a week.

Dance classes
Doing up my house - so lots of Pinterest and Insta searching for inspo
Batch cooking

Sewing and mastering my overlocker 🤬

Need to give crochet another go after my lockdown blanket was finished. Still have the wool somewhere…

Good call about jigsaws. I have one I’ve never done!

I live alone at last and am not working. I volunteer at a neighbourhood house a couple of hours a week, do an hour at the gym, and spend several hours a week at a local knitting group. That provides all the socialising I need. At home I browse MN and various cat- and feminism-related websites, or watch DVDs or Britbox or YouTube. This week I'm at home because I caught Covid, so no socialising, but plenty of knitting and reading.

ETA just saw mention of jigsaws - I do jigsaws on my iPad. No room to do physical ones. I also play Freecell and Wood Blocks, which is like Tetris but without the need to be quick.

I live alone. My days beyond work include:

  • painting
  • gardening/looking after my vegetables raised beds
  • looking after my pets
  • reading
  • going to pilates and horse riding lessons
  • swimming and walking on the seafront
  • visiting charity shops to look for stuff to decorate the house I recently bought
  • slowly renovating the house which means a lot of DIY
  • visiting art galleries and museums
  • learning how to use my new sewing machine
  • seeing friends
  • 10 minute guided meditation every morning
  • chatting to my friendly neighbour
  • regular correspondence with a friend who lives in New Zealand.

I am never bored or lonely and I always have something to do!

I do see my Grandson a lot and have days out with him and my daughter to museums and historical places and home Ed groups.( I'd also go on my own if l didn't go with them).

How about evening classes? I used to do allsoers of evening classes - languages, cookery, craft classes. It was a nice way to spend time and I met some lovely people.

MiddleAgedDread · 10/09/2024 07:59

I go in the office 2-3 times a week otherwise I start climbing the walls at home. Go to the gym 2-3 times a week, run 3-4 times a week (on my own, with friends, with the club and parkrun), I sometimes bake and by the time I’ve done housework, food shopping etc I don’t have much time left!

I only need 6hrs sleep a night so I typically go to bed at midnight. So work 8am to 5pm movie afte work get home 9pm I still have 3hrs before bed 💁‍♀️
