Is your brain ever quiet? Is there a constant monologue of chatter words and thoughts?

I was just wondering how normal this is.

It is normal for me, and so far the people I ask in real life it’s normal for them too.

I just thought I’d ask the masses for their experiences.

I guess I do but it is not intrusive at all. Unless I’m stressed, then it gets louder but in general my brain is quite calm. It’s not empty in there, but the thoughts are all unconscious iykwim

Yes, mine’s like this. Occasionally have intrusive thoughts, but I find it easy to redirect to something else, same with anxiety. Brain just quietly monitoring and calling attention to things that require it, otherwise just calm.

Neverending. If it's not constant chatter it's Brain Radio playing some completely random song over and over again. Today I'm being treated to Shakira. Yesterday it was Tarantella Nepoletana. Yes the pizza song.

I envy people who can shut their brains off and meditate. I tried a meditation class once and Brain Radio opted for A Little Spanish Flea for the entire hour and a half session. Never again.

I love the way you worded that, it really made me chuckle 🤭 "treated to Shakira" 😅

I'm exactly the same though. I actually darent listen to sad songs or power ballads or anything like that as I'm terrified of it being on my brains 1 track playlist for a week!

Also, I'm prone to making myself feel quite down in the dumps as I'll constantly overthink interactions and read into nuances of conversations I've had etc etc - constant rumination and overthinking. Then beating myself up for things. The list goes bloody on....

My head is a chaotic, noisy place to be. I envy people that have a quiet brain !

I subject I probably have either ADHD or some kind of OCD but really don't want the label and don't think it'd be beneficial to have on my medical records with the job I'm in etc. tried anti depressants but couldn't cope with the sleepiness as a side effect- the tiredness was debilitating.

All the time
as pps said, constant conversations with people, me talking to me as well, music….

There's usually something going on in there. At the moment it is full of plot lines, scenes and dialogue for a book I'm attempting to write. Not getting all that far with it though, and I've never written one before so it is taking a while!

Otherwise, I have a couple of hobbies I think about a fair bit, and I'm in a choir too, so I'm sometimes singing in the car on the way to work.

Constant monologue, visualizations and daydreaming. Have always been this way, am also very creative.
However when I meditate I can calm it and observe the thoughts/visualizations with a detached approach.

Wow, I can't even imagine what this is like, so jealous.

I wasn‘t born this way at all; my mother trained me to have her thought patterns and she has extreme, pathological anxiety. I decided when I left home to see if I could think differently (without following any therapy or particular approach) and it turned out I was able to break a lot of bad thinking habits on my own.

Mine's quiet by default.

No internal monologue unless I actively generate one – or very occasionally as I'm drifting off to sleep.

I also have aphantasia and have always wondered if it's connected somehow.

I call mine the clapping monkeys because that's what it feels like

I have a quiet mind. I tell myself stories sometimes to fill it but usually I can just sit there and not think at all - there are no pictures or sounds and I just watch the ceiling.

Ear worms are a well known phenomenon so I'd assume it's the majority of people who have this to a greater or lesser extent.

I wouldn't want to have a quiet mind, I'd find it boring. Its not a bad thing to be constantly thinking.
