What are the main differences between traditional middle class & new money?

Following on from the recent thread about normal things we consider posh. Most were arguing things were "new money" not posh.. So what exactly are the differences between new money & traditional middle /lower upper class?
I am neither & would love money new or old!

Mm, yes, nothing says "understated" like an inherited Neo-classical mansion.

With a ha-ha. I have always wanted a ha-ha.

(I think on Mn, where dukes are always racketing around dressed like tramps, incredibly hail-fellow-well-met with everyone, and condescended to by the Nasty Nouveaux who bought the Manor House and put in plantation shutters, until they overhear the tramp being addressed as ‘your grace’, the neo-classical is made acceptable if the duke and duchess live in the former servants’ quarters huddled over a two-bar heater, and there are saucepans under leaks in the portico.)

You’d still have to look them up, presumably. Unless the guy in question is wearing his accounts on a placard on the school run.

Yes ..so?

So why be so nosy that you actually go searching out information about someone else’s finances which do not affect you in any way?

I agree, it's weird behaviour to go rooting through public records to find out about the finances of your kid's school friend's parents. Suggests deep insecurity.

Firebird65 · 10/09/2024 11:55

The fact someone took the trouble to go googling anothers finances suggests envy, insecurity & a deep interiority complex . Good on the tradesman for not having the figures up on display for the schools Nosy Nelly, she will need to try harder. Smart businessman!

I can't imagine being that interested in anyone's finances.
I know from their jobs and spending power that most people I know earn more than I do, but I've never been invested enough to look anyone up on companies house

I have. I wouldn’t do it routinely but a close friend started seeing someone who’s an obvious cocklodger. He’s always boasting about the successful company he owns, but she pays for everything. So I had a look at his accounts which confirmed his massive enterprise is a one-man band.

These threads always read like the majority of posters don't know anyone from either demographic, instead forming their impressions of NM from TOWIE and MC from Jilly Cooper.

Some will fit those stereotypes, though...

There’s a couple live near to us who bought an old bungalow and did it up. She drives a white Range Rover with a personalised number plate, he has an merc and a Ferrari. 🙄

Please do enlighten us what the eye roll is for. You aren’t the only one so don’t take it personally. I’m curious as to what exactly is so very bad about any of these things that make you care.

But while they may be representative of caricature, they’re not representative of either new or old money.

Yes, I agree they're more representative of caricature than anything else.

And I know many people who are technically new money (as in, it was earned within the last couple of generations at most) who don't remotely fit the potted cliches being spouted on here, I can think of several people from old money who could be very accurately described by the qualities being ascribed to new money. Which again, mostly seemed gleaned from TOWIE as far as I can tell.

These threads are bizarre.

And some will fit any sterotype. Some Chinese people will be good at maths. Some black men will be criminals. Some Mumsnetters will be anti trans bigots. Some women won't be great at STEM subjects. Some men will be rapists. That doesn't make the stereotypes universally true or ok, or even particularly useful.

Why would any mumsnetter who does not want a man in female spaces be a "bigot"? What a bizarre statement.

I did not say that.

I said some people will fit any sterotype. I gave several examples. In this instance, some mumsnetters will have genuine concerns about 'a man in female spaces', however, some mumsnetters will simply be anti trans bigots. It's not the same thing and I didn't imply that it is.

I was making the point that one can't assume a homogeneous demographic based on a few individuals fitting a stereotype. You can't extrapolate characteristics to the larger group based on that. Maybe rest your jousting weapon back in the other forum?

That last line makes me want to swear at you.

The whole post made me want to swear at them!

Opine · 10/09/2024 22:54

@Pumpkittenspice You looked them up because you were intending to send your children there or something? Completely different to trying to satisfy yourself that the person you are insanely jealous of isn’t actually that wealthy after all.
Needing to a certain the financial security of a company for professional reasons is not the same as spiteful snooping.

raspberriez · 10/09/2024 23:02

Westfacing · 09/09/2024 10:48

There's always a lot of jealousy and spite aimed at 'new money' on MN.

People with new money will have earned it but are looked down on by those who inherited, or due to background were able to ease their way into the professions and positions of influence.

Absolutely this

SnugGreyAnt · 18/07/2025 02:04

I come from an old aristocratic family. The main difference is my family never talks about money - ever. We don’t show off and we don’t quiz people on their finances. It’s rude.

I find that almost everyone I meet in London (they all seem to be very ambitious and money orientated) asks me what I live off and where my money comes from. They constantly brag about their new £2500 dog.

newnamethanks · 18/07/2025 08:21

Glitz. Have you seen the state of the White House thanks to "I'm a very artistic guy" moneybags Trumpski ?
