How accurate is it to say that Desperate Housewives is the American equivalent to Coronation Street?

Does anyone else get similar vibes?

Suffering is a big part of life for a great many people, so I don't see how that's unrealistic. Maybe the real problem is that it's too realistic and reminds people of how common suffering is, which they don't want to think about while watching TV?
I don't watch it for that reason, because TV is an escape for me, except when I watch the news or documentaries.

Yes, some people do suffer, but I do know that I've never had a serial killer live on my doorstep. If I was on Coronation Street, I'd be due a new serial killer every 5 years!

😄
That would actually be more realistic on DH based on the geography alone.

No there's no real equivalent. There's two sorts of soaps: Prime time like Dallas and Dynasty, which are weeklies following a more traditional drama format and seasons, and daytime soaps, which air daily and continuously. There's not many daytime soaps left. It all seems to be talk shows now.

American daytime soaps have the ridiculous plot lines (look up Marlena Evans for a laugh, she's been possessed by the devil TWICE!) and ongoing families and such and are structured like EastEnders or Corrie but the style is totally different. It's usually much more glam and glossy, wealthier people, very amped up but not quite in the same way as a telenovela. Never working class. And never with the bits of humour you get on Corrie.

The USA also gets lots of telenovelas on the Spanish channels.
