What disguise did you think was needed for the teddy bears' picnic?

DH and I are expecting our first and were discussing children's songs.

He said the teddy bears' picnic was a bit dark because you had to go disguised otherwise they'd eat you as part of the picnic.

I always imagined going disguised as a bear so you could join in with this wonderful picnic (without any cannibalism).

So, what disguise did you imagine necessary in light of the picnic?

Teddy bears are between 10 and 50 centimetres. I could take them. They're not going to stop me gadding about in the woods.

I think that deep down we all know that the lyricist just picked the first vaguely plausible word that rhymes with “surprise” and hoped that nobody would ask any difficult questions!

This was my dad's take on our pre-parenting crisis!

I thought the full song was:

If you go down in the woods today,
You're sure of a big surprise.
If you go down in the woods today,
You'd better go in disguise.
For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there together because
Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic.

Picnic time for teddy bears
The little teddy bears are having a lovely time today
Watch them, catch them unawares
And see them picnic on their holiday
See them gaily gad about
They love play and shout
They never have any cares
At six o'clock their mummies and daddies will take them him to bed
Because they're tired little teddy bears

Ta da ta dum.

And that's the end. Where are the sinister lines about safety and risk?

Tbh I wouldn't care if there is, as there are loads of songs and nursery rhymes and stories which are very sinister if you read them carefully. It generally goes over children's heads because if the way they are written or because they are says to a jolly or soothing tune.

Am I the only person who didn't know the line about disguise? I have never heard it in my life! (I'm 42)

You definitely have to be disguised as a bush. For what purpose I'm not sure.

I am also one who thought "to stop you being eaten" because of it being "safer to stay at home"
