Old Fashioned B and Bs ( Bed and Breakfast)

DH and I are mid 50s
In the days pre kids and pre internet
we would occasionally stay in a B and B for a mini break.
Usually found from a magazine advert or a tourist information office,

Planning another weekend away and I find myself looking at
Premier Inns. The anonymity and homogeneousness of them is sort of appealing. We used them a lot travelling with children.

But I think we missing out on quirky things and characters.
I admit to not trying Air B and B. I don't think the experiences are quite the same.

Does anyone like an old style and B and B? Are they still about?

They are still quite common in Ireland. Stayed in one recently for work and it was really through word of mouth I found it as it was not on booking.com or airbnb.
They certainly are quirky and you meet interesting people. I personally like airbnb and use it a lot for work travel. Have actually made a good friend through it and stay with her regularly but book directly now.

I always stay in b&b or country style hotels, there are hundreds on booking sites. Where are you thinking of going.

Once stayed post ferry from Calais to Dover and the B and B was full of lavender sprigs and net curtains
. Too far off for me!! Give me shabby chic any day...

I'm not really thinking of anywhere in particular.
Mainly reminiscing that things have changed
A country or small hotel is different to the B and Bs I have in my mind.
Nets and lavender seem more in keeping with my ideas.
I remember some being run by quite elderly people, perhaps the sort who had bought a B and B in retirement. But as I'm thinking of 30 years ago they may not have been that old!

I used to stay in a B&B when I visited my parents.
Sadly it shut up shop and I now stay in a Holiday Inn.
I used to enjoy chatting to the owner over a (delicious) fresh cooked breakfast.
Not quite the same ambience at a pick yourself sweaty bacon and rubbery eggs Holiday Inn.

There are still lots out there. Often catering to people working from home, eg building contractors, in our local area. Cheaper than Premier Inns outside prime holiday time and I guess homelier too?

Also there are the posh ones that are more like small boutique hotels.

Loads in seaside towns still.

Look on booking.com, loads still around and they vary from basic to posh
