What Podcast?

I have a 5 hour drive next week which I'm dreading. I know the radio will get repetitive, so was thinking is listening to a podcast. Does anyone have any good suggestions? Not even sure what topic! I'm early 40s.

I second Criminal and TRIH

You're Wrong About is also quite way to listen to, it covers all kinds of things that have hit the public consciousness but have been misunderstood

How did this get made is utterly ridiculous but very funny, they look at terrible films and dissect them

Song exploder takes your through the production of popular songs, all kind of genres in there

Comfort blanket is very lovely, the host interviews people about tv/books/music they find comforting and return to repeatedly and gently dissect what makes them appealing

MrsMagoooo · 07/09/2024 19:30

The Witch Trials of JK Rowling is excellent.

Cherryana · 07/09/2024 19:32

Ghost Story (wondery) - investigative story that starts as ghost story but doesn’t end there
Tunnel 29 - documentary
This American Life - Magazine style
Even the Rich - Frothy
Unsolved Mysteries (if you can get past the American voice - by the end of a lot of listening I loved the voice) - Bit scary true crime
Bad Dates - comedians talking about their bad dates
Uncanny - scary paranormal

Total agreement with everyone else about:
Serial Season one
My dad wrote a porno

I'm open to anything really. Have started reading things about menopause as I'm approaching that age 😂
The journey is mostly on new roads for me, so still need to be able to concentrate. But I'm pretty open to anything really if someone says something is really good.

The mid-point with Gabby Logan has some great guests with a focus on this stage of life and there is a large back catalogue to pick and choose the ones you are more interested in.

The Rest Is History Titanic series. Really interesting. They have other series that have been great too - Kennedy, Lord Byron, The Rise of Hitler, The fall of Marie Antoinette.

I was going to recommend this!

Alternatively there is Shedunnit if you like old fashioned murder mysteries. She talks about the background to them, real crimes from the past, the writers' lives etc.

iolaus · 07/09/2024 19:49

The ones I like are
Escape this podcast - which are audio escape rooms (someone is a guest on there solving it so you haven't got to work it all out)
Solve this murder (same people) - but its murder mysteries where you work it out as they go along
Lateral with Tom Scott - random questions that people try to think laterally to figure it out (like On Sunday, June 6th, 1841, the famous English painter J.M.W. Turner rode a boat into the Thames and stayed there overnight. Why? or Why did many people, including Franz Kafka, queue up to look at a blank wall?)

Otherwise if there is a tv show you like there are often podcasts which look into each episode as they go - I binged on the good place ones

I like Tim's Listening Party if you're into classic albums

Bjorkdidit · 07/09/2024 19:59

I'm currently enjoying My Mate Bought a Toaster that's a host talking to comedians about their Amazon purchases. You could try downloading a few episodes featuring people you like.

Also How was it for you, Marcus Brigstocke and Rachel Parris reviewing mundane life activities.

Weirdos book club with Sara Pascoe and Cariad Lloyd.

LunaNorth · 07/09/2024 20:04

S-Town is brilliant.
Sweet Bobby is jaw-dropping.
West Cork is an interesting true crime.
Betwixt the Sheets is entertaining - history, but racy.
TRIH is my favourite.
In Our Time has some good episodes.

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 07/09/2024 20:08

My favourite easy listening podcast is Dish.
its Angela Hartnett (chef) and Nick Grimshaw, hosting other celebs for lunch and chatting food and life.
Perfect for driving and you’ve got a few seasons worth to binge!

You might like The Shift. It's a journalist who interviews women over 40. They always talk about the menopause at some point. There's a mix of interviewees so you have to pick the ones you are interested in

Mrsgreen100 · 07/09/2024 20:27

BBC iPlayer
radio 4 and 4 extra lots of great stuff
and it’s free if u have tv licence

Bjorkdidit · 07/09/2024 20:54

You can listen to BBC podcasts on BBC Sounds, which is utterly shit for series as it won't play them in order and has a few other shortcomings, but you don't need a TV licence.

Where possible, I listen to them on a different app, such as Antennapod but it doesn't pick them all up, or sometimes there's a delay of a few weeks. But you can skip ahead 30 s to miss the adverts, which are getting a bit out of control tbh. I also play mine at 1.25 speed to get through them faster because I listen to loads of different ones. I don't notice unless it's someone who talks particularly fast, Martin Lewis, I'm looking at you.

The Rest is Entertainment with Richard Osman & Marina Hyde. SO interesting and funny

Yes, second this👍

Mumteedum · 07/09/2024 21:02

If you've never heard these, it's really funny and gentle humoured and there's loads of episodes. It's great if you know the places.

True crime/comedy - Let's go to court

Current affairs - News agent

True Crime - Crime Junkie, Anatomy of Murder, Park Predators, My Favorite Murder, Dateline (you get to listen to Keith Morrison, and he is amazing)

HowardTJMoon · 07/09/2024 21:02

Radio 4's got loads of programmes that they also publish as podcasts. One of my favourites is Natalie Haynes Stands Up For The Classics. She takes various people (some real, some mythical) from ancient Greek and Roman history and does a very funny and informative look at what made them special. I adore these. Radio 4 does a lot of really good comedy, documentaries, plays and all sorts.

I also really like Comfort Eating with Grace Dent. She interviews celebs around a framework of what food they love to eat. She's a good interviewer and (most of) the interviewees are worth listening to. They're often surprisingly touching.

The Off Menu podcast with Ed Gamble and James Acaster has a similar-ish premise to Comfort Eating but is more boisterous. Again, it's somewhat dependent on the guest but it's usually huge fun.

99% Invisible is a podcast that's been going for a long time. It started off mostly about the built environment but it's developed into a broader range of "Hmm, that's interesting" kind of topics. Very high production quality and often fascinating.

The Dollop. Dave Anthony reads stories from history to his friend, Gareth Reynolds. Incredibly funny. I was once on a long drive and listening to their early episode about the Burke and Wills expedition across Australia. I had to pause it multiple times because I was laughing so much I couldn't see the road. Very sweary.
