Period pain worsening in perimenopause

The only sign that I’m in perimenopause is some period changes - length, heavy bleeding, and pain levels for the last couple of years. I’m 50.

For the last year or so the period pain is getting worse - it’s not absolute agony but it’s pretty blimmin terrible at times. I’ve always had pain since a young teen but this got better when I was on the pill for years for PCOS (that’s now been gone for years), and then better for a while after DC. I’ve had Tranexamic Acid for about 2 years as flow became heavy for the first time ever.

The pain levels are quickly returning to teen/pre-pill levels and symptoms which were horrific until I went on the pill at 18 - serious pain starting in abdomen and spreading to lower back, hips, thighs. Headaches, feel sick, lethargic.

Alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol often doesn’t touch the sides, hot baths and water bottles are of variable help. I read somewhere to try having a glass of wine so I’m doing that right now and yet to see a change - plus past two doses of ibup/para have barely helped at all. Next dose due I’m going to try co-codadamol.

If I go to the GP what might they say? What better pain relief can they give and would they want to check for anything in particular? Our GP surgery is generally pretty good at not fobbing you off.

Will you consider a mirena coil to hopefully stop periods?

ElderMrs · 07/09/2024 18:37

Yes it's much worse. I'm in peri and also getting flooding.

Crazystupidlove55 · 07/09/2024 18:37

I’d definitely recommend the mirena coil if this can be an option.

Following as i'd love to know if there is anything to help that doesnt involve a mirena coil.

I’d never had a heavy period or a period pain in my life until I hit 45 and it all went pear shaped. Heavy flooding, one period almost leading into another I wondered what the hell had happened. GP gave me some type of HRT which really helped , until the patches were discontinued and alternative did not help. I was back to the heavy periods. Luckily didn’t last long, periods stopped suddenly, none of the awful menopause symptoms ( got a bit hot but lived in the ME so not surprising)
Worth asking your GP about HRT?

yeesh · 07/09/2024 19:04

My periods are much better since I have been on HRT, lighter & way less pain

Globetrote · 07/09/2024 19:40

I really don’t want a coil and I presume I don’t have enough symptoms to warrant HRT, as peri symptoms are confined to periods only?

I’ve had enough drama with periods irregularity/spotting etc in my life that I really have no tolerance for that again waiting for a coil to settle down. I know it could be fine but I can’t be bothered with the risk.

I assumed the GP could just give me stronger painkillers as the transexamic acid helps with the heavy flow/flooding.

Yep. I never had painful periods, but I hit 45 and….well, it wasn’t good. I was offered the coil but I don’t bloody want it. Other than that, useless GP and equally useless private doctor offered me nothing. Periods all over the place (none for 2 months then 2 weeks of literally looking and feeling like I’m bleeding to death), weird rage, hair loss (on my head only, my face has sprouted some weird fast growing pube like hairs. So that’s nice) Solidarity from me op, it’s hideous.
