Anyone been to Iceland in December?

We are booked to go to Iceland in December and booked to go on a day bus tour to Katja Ice Cave.

I'm currently obsessing about waterproof trousers. Do we want normal trousers and waterproof over trousers in our bags in case of rain or donwe want waterproof hiking trousers we can wear all day?

The wind - which is biting - was more of an issue; it didn't rain at all whilst I was there but I wore waterproof trousers over my normal ones to keep the wind out.

We went April. The wind was horrendous.

Icelandic jumpers are brilliant but very expensive, I’ve knitted a couple of my own and as they’re in the round it’s really really quick. Happy to share pattern and wool link if you knit. It’s around 1/3 of the cost of buying out there.

We went in January. No rain, it was too cold, but we did get snow. We had waterproof coats but mine wasn't very thick (joules Mac) and if I went again I'd focus more on warmth and layers than waterproofing. I didn't get any specific cold weather gear just took a normal hat, scarf, gloves and I was cold. Take a proper beanie type hat that covers your ears snugly, thermal gloves and a fleece snood if you can find one. And many layers! We wore thermals under trousers every day and several top layers.

Went in May. As said the wind was biting and we had flurries of snow.. Wore long underwear (M&S Heatgen), leggings and overtrousers. Would definitely recommend normal (warm) trousers and waterproof overtrousers. You definitely need layers. Second the idea of knitting your own jumper. The cost to buy out there is into the hundreds!! Currently knitting a cardigan in Icelandic pattern after falling in love with one when there and realising I just couldn't justify the price.

We went in December, although apparently we were incredibly lucky with weathe r- snow storms the week before and after but the week we went was relatively mild.

We wore thick joggers with waterproof trousers over the top, hiking boots with thick socks and thermal layers.

I'm planning a trip to Iceland next year, probably about April so this is all useful info, I've been to Norway but it sounds like Iceland will be even colder?

You can warm up in all the gorgeous hot springs. The Secret Lagoon is gorgeous and the municipal pools in Reykjavik are fun.

We went in December and didn't take waterproof trousers. Thermal underclothes and layers with a waterproof longish coat.

It didn't rain and not much snowfall unfortunately. They gave us overalls for the snowmobiles which was fabulous! As others have said though the wind was biting at times.

If you want to attempt to see the northern lights, next time I'd try it with a smaller group. The coach load trip wasn't the best given all of the coaches from other places congregated too!

I've been in feb and it was bloody freezing! I wore 2 pairs of jogging bottoms and waterproof trousers over the top. To cut down on luggage, proper warm waterproof hiking trousers would probably have been better but you'll still need something warm under. When i say it's cold, i mean it's cold! Have a brilliant time, Iceland is incredible.

My daughter went in February- and didn't even wear her coat most of the time - found the fleece we got from Decathlon kept her warm enough. I'd suggest foundation layers too.

100% merino wool base layer (top and bottom, plus normal clothes over the top, a decent wool jumper and waterproof that is also wind proof. The combo of cold wind and wet is not to be underestimated!!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 07/09/2024 11:54

We went in Jan/Feb. Definitely take waterproof trousers to wear over other clothes and a good quality waterproof coat and waterproof boots. Hats, gloves and thermal under layers etc. The wind was biting but we were wrapped up well and we really enjoyed our trip!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 07/09/2024 11:57

I took Sorel boots, which were lovely and toasty and great for walking in the ice and snow, but best to buy a larger size than you would usually use as they come in quite small.

It was cold but not as cold as i expected tbh. It was dark (pitch black) until lunchtime. Wierd having breakfast in the dark but cool! I loved it. Stay for new year. Its so different
