what do you if you need to change career urgently and have no skills

achipandachair · 06/09/2024 22:45

Actually I don't mind about a career any more I just want a job

Are there things that can be done by someone literate, numerate, reasonably personable, no work to take home, can use a computer, DBS check will come back clear, can drive, can stand up and present, limited amount of weird politics

what can I do?

I feel like there must be something because I am always hearing that teachers are leaving the profession. I have some of the skills that they have. What does this mean, are there things that people like me could do? What do people do who just need a job?
I tried Aldi but they didn't even get back to me. I have often heard retail work can be very hard to get

I don't know, I'm feeling stuck as well. I've attempted the same degree twice and failed. My brother though without any qualifications has managed to climb the ladder to a good career in finance

Hugmorecats · 06/09/2024 22:58

@achipandachair you don’t say what your work experience is like? Do you have customer service experience? Maybe something sales related like estate agent?

I don't think I am very good at sales. I can talk to people but I can't close. I used to work in a design management style of role in an industry that doesn't really exist any more. I was trying something else but it isn't working out

OP posts:
achipandachair · 06/09/2024 23:01

Sorry to hear that @ncforcatquestion . What was the degree, do you mind me asking?

limited amount of weird politics

I think that lets out anywhere I’ve ever worked!

Look at the websites of the big employers in your area and see what admin / office jobs they have?

Chemistry

achipandachair · 06/09/2024 23:29

Did you have a definite plan for chemistry now you have to re-think? It’s hard, isn’t it. I’ve lost a lot of confidence.

I would really welcome positive stories (with practical tips!) from people who had to start again and fell on their feet

What are your skills, what do you want to do know and why the change?

ncforcatquestion · 06/09/2024 23:34

Not really, I just liked the idea of lab work. I wish I'd been able to take a Covid testing job during the pandemic now, but it would have involved leaving my then 11 year old alone some evenings. Would have been great experience

don’t know what I want to do now

change because I’m burning out / burnt out. Not sure if I’m being let go

How about project management? At our work place each department has a PM who manages things like budgets, resource allocations, monthly risk reports, supporting recruitment, supporting the senior mangers meetings

You don't have to be an expert in those areas, more like the link between the department you work for and the teams in the organistion responsible for HR, finance, risk etc... like a super PA or (executive cat herder) for a whole department.

Beezknees · 07/09/2024 08:55

I have no qualifications or skills and work in customer service for an energy company. It's not sales, it's inbound calls. About half the time is on calls and the other is answering emails. It's not for everyone though as you obviously have to have the right personality to deal with the public, sometimes angry people and it's on the computer all day.

There's room for progression as well to team leaders, middle management etc.

achipandachair · 07/09/2024 08:57

Thanks @Beezknees - do you know how they got into that? What kid of company do you work for?

and @Ginmonkeyagain - thanks - how did you get your job?

Do you work in an office or take calls at home?

@achipandachair you might find it helpful / reassuring / inspiring to browse the

Mature Study and Retraining board.

Countless experiences of starting and re-starting.

Ginmonkeyagain · 07/09/2024 09:13

@achipandachair So I don't do the role I describe, I work in policy and we need a lot of organising! People who do that role generally come from an administrative or project management background.

It is worth looking at vacancies in the civil service or public bodies who often need those sorts of skills and maybe entry level jobs - I don't know what your experience and salary expectations are so entry level may be off the mark.

achipandachair · 07/09/2024 10:00

thanks

It's for a big energy company along the lines of British Gas (not British Gas though). I had been made redundant last year and needed a job desperately, the job was advertised on indeed. I do 2 days in the office and 3 at home. I like it, and have had 2 pay rises already. We also get a yearly performance bonus and a yearly cost of living payment.

Tarantella6 · 07/09/2024 11:08

Operations roles in large companies - customer service, account management, purchasing, logistics planning. They all have entry level roles and you can work your way up or job hop around them.
