Mattresses - my head is exploding

My current mattress (Eve) is destroying my back, it's time for a new one. I also have general aches and pains and bursitis in my shoulder.

I wanted to buy a Warren Evans mattress but I'm concerned about the wool content as I have carpet moths. I can't eradicate them completely unfortunately as they're in the communal areas of my block of flats. I've read that encasing the mattress in a zipped cover can stop them, but it will obviously need washing occasionally and as I live alone I'm anticipating this would be very difficult for me to manage single-handedly. Does anyone have experience of moths and mattresses? I do have a wool duvet cover which they don't seem interested in.

Alternatives are places like Dreams, Furniture Village etc but I wouldn't know where to start. I know I could go and lie on some but it's impossible to know how you'll get on with it until you've slept on the mattress for a few weeks. They offer 60 day trials but they come with lots of terms and conditions and I'm worried I'll get stung. Warren Evans' trials are no quibble.

I looked at IKEA but the reviews of their mattresses are dire, I don't want to risk it.

Can anyone offer any recommendations? Or reassurance on moths and wool mattresses?

Edit: recommendations for pocket sprung mattresses. I'd never touch a memory foam mattress again!

We've got a Southdown mattress from button and sprung. I love it it is so so comfortable, its blissfully soft on the top but provides excellent support. It does have wool in it but we have a few carpet moths and it hasn't been an issue and we've had it 3 years now.
What sold it to us was a 100 day try it guarantee, you can return it no charge any time within 100 days and get a full refund.

My Warren Evans mattress is coming on Monday. I can’t wait, but also anxious that it won’t be right 😳

they’re taking away my old one for free. I keep thinking I should try to sell it as there’s nothing wrong with it per se, but I live in a flat and don’t have anywhere I could realistically put it while I waited for somebody to collect.

it does mean of course that if the WE mattress isn’t right, I will have no mattress Grin

Update:

WE mattress arrived today and I don't think I like it Sad

The first thing I noticed when I got on it is that one side feels softer than the other. On one side it feels like I'm sleeping on a slant, hips aren't aligned and I'm falling off. The other side seems ok. The other issue is I can feel the springs. Is that normal for a medium firm spring mattress? I've had memory foam for so long, I can't remember.

I'm really regretting asking them to recycle my old mattress now. I'm not sure what to do Confused

No, it’s not normal. I have never been able to actually feel the springs in any sprung mattress. If you don’t like it at this early stage I’d be sending it back asap.

user028793 · 16/09/2024 17:13

I’ve emailed them. I’ve also asked if there’s any possibility of getting my old mattress back although I think that ship has probably sailed!

I’m so disappointed, especially considering how expensive it was. I didn’t choose the deluxe models but I didn’t choose the cheapest either. Not what I was expecting.

does it need some time to unpack itself or recover from travelling?

There shouldn't be a slant on one side and you shouldn't feel any springs. What did customer service say when you told them?

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 16/09/2024 17:26

I'd get a spirit level and take a picture of it on the mattress to show the slant. Sounds faulty.

I spoke to someone on live chat who said it didn't sound right but said I needed to email customer services.

I wondered if it was possible it was put on upside down but then it would surely have a label on one side making it clear.

We're waiting for delivery of a new bed and mattress from Hypnos - we really like the existing Hypnos that we have. We tested it out at their showroom in Prince's Risborough (?) where the staff were really helpful and not at all pushy. They have different products to the ranges that are available to the large bed stores. Well worth a visit.

Another tip that might be useful - Crendon Furniture have an ebay store, and sell Hypnos ex-stock/showroom beds. If they have something that suits it can save a fortune!

OP - hope you get your new mattress sorted soon!

That doesn't sound normal. I think it's normal to take a week or two to 'bed in' (haha) your new mattress, but the slanting and feeling the springs don't sound right. I definitely didn't have those issues with my new mattress (spring mattress though different make). What have customer services said? Hopefully they'll be able to deliver a replacement - it's a reputable company, so presumably it's a blip and they don't usually have those problems.

We've just bought a new mattress from Benson's for Beds. Dreams was on the same retail park and had a similar selection.

Both had a test machine thing where you lie on it and it measures pressure and what type would be best.

I suspect this is really just down to how much you weigh.

They then picked out a number of options to test.

It arrives next week.

This.

I had the same dread as you but Benson's machines test thing and lady were fab.

It was remarkably easy to whittle it down and make a choice.

Mayblook at bamboo as an alternative topper to wool?

We absolutely love our Sleep Soul 2000, it was a Which best buy a couple of years ago. www.mattressonline.co.uk/Product/SleepSoul-Space-2000-Pocket-Memory-Pillow-Top-Mattress-P1990

When did most mattresses become non flippable, only rotatable ?
When did the trend start?
Who started it ?
It halves the length of use.
It's a manufacturer's dream as you have to buy a new one sooner.

Yikes it definitely shouldn’t be uneven, you’ll wake up feeling sea sick 🤢 Mine is a wool one from Floks and I flipping love it. I sleep better and I’m sure it’s helping me with night ‘flushes’

user028793 · 05/10/2024 17:49

After I last posted I almost fell out of bed when I leaned over to switch the lamp off due to the instability!

I contacted WE and they’re currently in the process of sorting it out for me, although what that will entail I’m not sure. I first contacted them on the 16th September so was expecting them to have sent a replacement by now but it’s been back and forth with photos/videos and waiting for them to speak to someone further up etc. I’m starting to lose my patience. I rotated the mattress so I’m sleeping on the unaffected side which is very comfortable, but obviously not sustainable.

it’s annoying because the lanolin smell is just starting to go, but when (if?!) they send a replacement my flat is going to smell like a farmyard again Grin

I appreciate you have a new mattress now. If you end up changing again I would say a lot of memory foam mattresses are crap - we bought an Emma one and hated it. If you are going memory foam you need to pay the big bucks and get a Tempur. Ours is 15 years old and still perfect. But it cost about £2000.

ArtfulReader · 05/10/2024 17:58

Good luck. It also shouldn’t be smelly I don’t think 😬

BringMeTea · 13/11/2024 20:23

@user028793 hallo, hope you don't mind me asking but did you ever get satisfaction from Warren Evans? Was considering buying from them but not if they never sorted your issue...

user028793 · 25/11/2024 10:26

@BringMeTea sorry, I've only just seen your post when coming here to give an update!

Customer services were great in the end, the delay was due to staff sickness. They agreed it was faulty and delivered a new one a few weeks ago, which feels totally different. It's SO comfortable, like sleeping on a supportive cloud. It's the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on and it's really helped with some of my aches and pains. So I'd definitely recommend them if you're still looking.

I've done it! It's taken me all afternoon to click 'pay' but it's done. I feel very twitchy about the cost but hopefully it will last a long time and my back will start to feel better. Added bonus of not taking up feeling like I'm lying on a hotplate.

Did you get the Warren Evan’s mattress and do you like it,
