Animals and Birds Common in your area

I'm just interested in what wildlife is commonly seen in your area that might not be seen in other counties or countries. You don't have to say the specific area (you can if you want) but I thought it might be of interest to some. I will definitely be jealous if you are in a country with exotic animals commonplace Grin

I am in England and here are mine-
Muntjac deer
Red Kites
Foxes
Kingfishers
Herons
Owls
Bats
Moles

We sometimes get large numbers of partridges in the garden & coming up to the house. They look very cute.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 08/09/2024 13:47

Yes could well be coots :-)

Can I give a shoutout on here to the Merlin app for identifying birdsong? Best thing ever. I pick up all sorts on my morning walks - this morning I had a marsh tit, goldcrest, nuthatch, treecreeper, and several woodpeckers. I'd never be able to see them, but they are out there!

StarSlinger · 08/09/2024 13:50

Pigeons
Squirrels
Seagulls, even though I live about as far from the sea as you can get
Foxes
Crows
Magpies
And other assorted birds

This thread is making me homesick for England! I'm in Australia and in my suburban garden (a kilometre from the coast) I often see tiny lizards (skinks and geckos), all kinds of garden birds (my favourite is the rainbow lorikeet 🦜), snails, magpies, fuzzy caterpillars (loads at the moment - early spring), insects, spiders (thankfully not many nasty ones - occasionally a redback or huntsman), Portuguese millipedes and sometimes ducks that fly down from a nearby creek. As the weather warms up bloody loads of mosquitos and the occasional cockroach (shudder). Thankfully never seen a wild snake.

In many spots around 20 minutes drive from us we will often see a koala or kangaroo on a walk in a more bushland type of area.

I really miss British wildlife, especially red kites, tiny garden birds, squirrels, hedgehogs and muntjac deer.

Buzzards and Bullfinches and Pine martens

newbies - White toothed shrews (not very cute) Bank voles (ultra cute)

I've also looked out the window at some brambles (that will have to go) currently covered in fruit. One cluster had a robin on it, about a foot away there was a blackcap. Two of the most aggressive entities in the garden if not on the planet, but with enough food that they were being quite calm and amiable.

MovingTooFast121 · 08/09/2024 14:07

In the last few months in my village I have seen:
Red Kites
Buzzards
Kestrels
Jays
Goldfinches
Bullfinches
Robins
Green woodpeckers
Yellow hammers
Sparrows
Dunnocks
All the tits
Wood pigeons
Jackdaws
Tawny owls
Barn owls
Geese

Peafowl (not native obviously but they roam freely)
A weirdly high slow worm population
Voles

Badgers
Hedgehogs
Deer
Mink
Stoats
Squirrels

Hoenslty can’t move for bloody wildlife here 😂

glis glis Angry
Appear to be simultaneously both invasive and protected, and to be good at avoiding traps.

And no, I hadn't heard of them before either.

MyStylish40s · 08/09/2024 14:16

North East England, working on an industrial estate built in the 1960s

  • kingfisher
  • oyster catchers
  • blue tits
  • squirrels
  • heron
  • fox
  • loads of magpies
  • a very big cat

Unfortunately we have to move to another site soon and I will miss my animals 😢

Edited to add - on a recent holiday in the Yorkshire Dales, I saw a pine marten dart out of a bush and back in again. I was so excited!

Poggishairtufts · 23/10/2024 16:27

A feckin mouse in the kitchen

Rooftileswithmoss · 23/10/2024 16:50

France - we have:
Black redstarts
Bats
Little owls and barn owls
Golden oriole
Buzzards
Red kite
Egrets
Lesser spotted woodpeckers
Cranes have been flying over for the last few days as they migrate
The usual birds, particularly swallows
Wild boar
Deer
Pine martens
Hedgehogs
Hares
Various snakes
Lizards
Crickets
All sorts of beetles
Today a lot of butterflies and dragonflies thanks to the sunshine

We live somewhere where farmers don't use many pesticides. The crops have wildflowers growing in amongst them, trees and hedges are left (the tractors go round them!) and there's minimal pollution. The difference in wildlife is staggering.
