NHS jobs clothing question

Putting this in Chat for speed.

One of my children (young adult) is starting a healthcare course at college, and has to wear a specific tunic.

If you work in healthcare, what do you wear on the bottom half? Idk if it's relevant, but the clinics DC will work in are non-surgical eg few/no open wounds etc. They won't wear leggings.

Also, if non-surgical, are you allowed to wear bandanas or scrub caps? DC prefers these to keep hair out of the way.

Also, what is comfortable to wear on your feet?

I need to know a) what you think the best option is; and b) what you think the best budget option is.

DC does have sensory issues, so might need to consider base layers. DC also prefers to be covered from ankle/wrist/neck because of unwanted male attention from her peers over the past few years (since age 12 & ongoing).

At present I have low/no budget, but over time can replace.

Usually soft trousers. However, tops may have to go to the elbow for anti infection reasons.

Unsure on hair, that varies.

NHS policy is bare below the elbows if you’re patient facing. And people do pull you up on it. It applies to everyone.

We get given trousers but normally we would wear navy trousers. Not jeans. Not sure about hair but it has to be tied back. No necklaces, or hoop earrings. Shoes have to not be opened toed and without holes, so recently my trust banned crocs with the holes. Skechers are popular.

Most places are black trousers but some specialities might be navy. As others have said, hair tied back, bare below the elbows (including no watches, bracelets etc, no rings other than a plain wedding band). I'd go with plain hair ties/bands to start with and see what others are wearing as standards vary a lot.

If there is a uniform….It will be bare below the elbow….even with minimal patient contact…..and that will be non negotiable…..trousers are just normally polyester zip up……she could wear a scrub cap under our uniform policy but it wouldn’t be usual and could make her stand out for all the wrong reasons…. We have a lady wears a bandana tho

These replies are very helpful.

It sounds like she might be able to wear old school trousers underneath to start with.
