DD in surgery abroad while travelling

DD 21 been travelling in Asia for only 5 weeks and broken her elbow! She's just been taken down for surgery to put a pin in. I feel so far away and useless. It only happened about 8 hours ago. The hospital have been great but haven't even managed to speak to the daytime insurance people yet, only the night crew. That's going to be the end of travelling for her for now. She's so upset and gutted. God it's hard being a parent sometimes. Just wanted to get it off my chest as no one else is awake right now.

Oh bless you and her. I understand that as a parent you must be desperate to be there with her. Has she got her phone with her so you can keep in contact when she comes round? So sorry op and sending a hand hold xx

TryingToHelpBut · 06/09/2024 05:10

Thank you @FlamingoFloss yes she has her phone with her (it was at 2% in the ambulance but they've found her a charger)
Have to say, it's a lot quicker and easier than UK A&E - haven't paid for it yet though. I feel so tearful but the practical side of brain is telling me it's just an elbow and she's in a capital city hospital.

generally, (and I hate to say this) hospitals abroad are better than our UK hospitals (speaking from experience). She will be ok I’m sure but I totally understand the worry and that you just want to be there with her. Is there any chance in you getting a flight? X

And bless them for finding her a charger. That’s so kind and wonderful reassurance to be able to keep in touch. They sound very caring x

Stop the press: private hospitals have shorter queues!
UK A&E is faaaaar better than the majority of the world's public hospitals. Thank your lucky stars you will (hopefully) never have to resort to one of those.

Well, I do speak from experience having had surgery in a hospital abroad as well as stays and surgeries in NHS and UK private hospitals. My experience in the foreign hospitals was far superior than what I experienced in the Uk

FlamingoFloss · 11/09/2024 00:54

@TryingToHelpBut how is your daughter doing now?

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/09/2024 01:32

Where in Asia? I ended up in hospital travelling when younger and it was lovely.

My mum offered to come out and carry my bag so I could carry on, bless her. She didn't have to and I carried on.

I just want to hug you. Your poor dd and poor you. I hope everything goes perfectly. I swear motherhood is so scary.

The NHS is honestly not as great as you think it is. I've spent loads of time in a public hospital in SE Asia recently and they've been amazing. I've heard of friends having to wait ages at NHS maternity triage or their symptoms being dismissed until they were in a really bad way. Contrast with my experience - I waited max ten minutes each time I went to triage and, if anything, they were too reluctant to let me leave the ward once I was admitted. Whilst admitted I had some bleeding in the middle of the night and there was immediately a Dr available to check everything and do an ultrasound. In the morning the consultant came and repeated the checks just to make sure. When I raised a concern about haemmaroids within an hour they had someone from the general surgery team to come and check.

Whereabouts in Asia is she?
Before you know it, your DD will have a flock of lovely MNers at her bedside!

Where did the OP say it was a private hospital?? Many Asian countries have modern, good public hospitals so I don’t know why you’re being so rude about them.

You have experience of the majority of the world's public hospitals do you? You must have done a lot of travelling, and had a lot of illness/accidents. 🤔

I hope everything goes well for your DD OP. What a thing to happen.

Thank you so much all. It was in Vietnam. It was very scary but the hospitals were great- I don't know what type of hospital she was taken to but her travel insurance (Tesco backpackers insurance if interested) were very good and took care of that very promptly. The bill of 60 million dong was quite scary to look at but was around £3000 pounds. The hospital were great- I hear English is very widely spoken in Vietnam and she didn't have any issues in that area.
She is still in pain but the main issue is the typhoon rain is still going as she has to keep it dry. No showers yet either. She has struggled, I can't lie. There have been tears -and mine secretly- but she doesn't want to come home yet.
The plan now is to visit a friend in another city then fly to Australia to be with a close friend in a few days now she has a fit to fly letter. The stitches will have to come out there.
