Is it worth claiming on contents insurance

My son had a mishap recently and my sofa has been damaged, to the point where it's no longer usable. It will cost £950 to replace (only a year old). I am covered by insurance and excess is only £100, but I am wary of claiming on it because of likely higher premiums in future.

What do you think? Would you claim for this? If you have claimed in the past, has it hiked up your premiums substantially?

Hi, not claimed for a sofa only but had an escape of water claim recently. Total payout from insurance was over £70k including drying out, premium did go up but only by £50 a year.

That wasn’t cash settlement, furniture, kitchen, flooring was only replaced like for like.

Yes. Unless you think it's perfectly acceptable to write off £800 and buy a new one?

We paid £1200 for a carpet and it was damaged by some soot spilled on it. There was a possibility that it could be specialist cleaned, but the assessor said not. The claim process was farcical because the assessor cancelled appointments, then lost the measurements he stored on his iPad. The policy was new for old, but we were only awarded £600 because they sourced the carpet from their suppliers. We asked for the money, so we could get our own carpet from our local store, but they would only offer the £600 it cost to get a carpet from their warehouse.

So make sure that you can get the right value, if you decide to claim.

Oh and the premium the following year was greatly increased.
