Do you listen to classical music?

I don’t and never have!

I got a taxi today and the driver switched off the local radio station and put on classical music instead. I found it really relaxing and I thought, why does it never occur to me to do that?

I do play music at home every day through Alexa but never classical!

Yes, constantly when wfh. I love contemporary classical too. @chocnice Night sounds on radio 3 is my favourite podcast. If you like classical and want to hear something by a woman try dobrinka Tabakova's cello concerto 😍😍😍😍😍

NomenNudum · 19/10/2024 17:09

Whoever it was who likes debussy, try Ravel and Satie.

Yes, I grew up with it - I didn't really hear popular music much until I was 10 or thereabouts. These days my musical tastes are broad, but I am that annoying person who can recognise a piece from a few bars. There's a few pieces that have enormous significance for me - the Adagio from Brahms' first Piano Concerto is probably the biggest, it was my late father's absolute favourite and I think of him every time I hear it.

Ha! Right now on Radio 3, the most terrifying piece you've ever heard!! Stockhausen. Weird!

Sheknowsaboutme · 20/10/2024 08:45

Yes. Every Sunday morning, classic fm is on when i prep the veg for the weekly Sunday roast.

I also have it on spotify. Especially west end music

Yes, me and DH really enjoy classical music, and we invariably have Classic FM on in the car. Love musical theatre, opera and ballet too. During the pandemic when we were both WFH we’d have Classic FM or Scala Radio on in the morning and then Absolute Classic Rock in the afternoon, because we both love rock as well. Actually we both have an eclectic taste when it comes to music.

As an aside I was always a bit’meh’ about Mozart until I listened to Greg Jenner’s ‘You’re Dead to Me’ podcast about him. What an eye opener. Such beautiful music. We also watched the recent series on BBC2 Mozart Rise of a Genius and again heard pieces that were new to me. Amazing.

My mum listens to La Scala. It sends me and BIL into fits of mirth. Such random arrangements of peculiar tunes on odd instruments. "Coming up, an interesting reworking of Aqua's Barbie Girl on the clarinet".

Singleandproud · 20/10/2024 15:31

Yes, quite often Ill search x (genre) playlist and listen to something random whilst I cook and add the songs I like to my own playlist to try and widen my taste. I like the Classical Bangers playlist - it's all the popular songs you'll recognize

We aren't from an instrument playing family but would have it on in the background when DD was small instead of putting the TV on.

@WestwardHo1 I know, it is completely off the wall sometimes!

Young Musician of the Year on BBC2 now 👍🏼

Davros · 20/10/2024 19:32

I'm watching it. The firevus on, cat on my lap, glass of wine, bag of scratchings and YMotY. Life doesn't get much better than this.

SabbatWheel · 20/10/2024 19:33

Generally no, unless it is something specific I want to listen to or a composer recommended by friends, radio etc. I listen to a lot of R4 or other talk-based stations.

My degree is in Music so I know exactly what I like or don’t like, and why. Every piece of music I listen to gets analysed in my head as it goes, so it can be quite tiring.

SerafinasGoose · 20/10/2024 20:19

Been a listener since childhood: I grew up with my mother's and grandfather's love of classical music so it's like something of a comfort blanket for me.

Opera: 'La Traviata' and 'Carmen' are absolute favourites but I love the overall genre: not fond of 'Butterfly' but I've really liked everything else Puccini has ever done.

Favourite composers: there are almost too many to list but these would include Mendelssohn (esp. his string symphonies which are sublime), Chopin, Mozart, Rossini, Saint-Saens, Debussy, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Bizet, Verdi, Bach, Sibelius, Berlioz, Vivaldi. Lost count of others.

Proms isn't really my thing but give me a live opera or ballet and I'm there!

There are a few Vienna music companies who do this. They had one classical rendition of Queen, another of the Beatles and I've heard it done with Queens of the Stone Age too. A combination of my two favourite genres: classic and classic rock: what's not to like!

WestwardHo1 · 20/10/2024 20:49

My mum was staying with me once and I came home from work one warm evening to find her doing the gardening with La Scala booming out. It was an orchestral version of Right Here Right Now by Fatboy Slim. The whole street could hear Blush

@SerafinasGoose Love the idea of classical Queens of the Stone Age!

@WestwardHo1 I wonder if that was from the Pete Tong Classic House album. It's a compilation by Pete Tong, The Heritage Orchestra and Jules Buckley. It's brilliant.

WestwardHo1 · 20/10/2024 20:54

Yeah I have to admit that it worked really well.

It's a banger of a tune.

LoudSnoringDog · 20/10/2024 20:57

When I was a ward manager on a very busy mental health ward I would drive home to classic FM. Something about that 30 min drive home with the music allowed me to regulate myself before stepping into the house. Before that I would arrive home stressed and anxious.

Occasionally now when I've had a stressful day I will put it on again. I genuinely think listening on the drive home between 2012-2016 saved my sanity.

amicissimma · 20/10/2024 21:16

Definitely.

I'm having a Mozart piano sonata phase at the moment. I find them quite sublime. And hard to believe that they come out of the same brain as his Requiem.
