What's the best way to book weekend getaways?

I'm looking to book a weekend getaway for may to Rome for me and DH.
I've been looking online and one of the best deals I've got is just over £900 for 2 nights for us.
I've never booked for just us so I'm unsure if this is a good deal or not.
Is there a better way to do this? I've seen people do cheap getaways for a lot less but have no idea on how to do so. Any help with the best websites to use would be appreciated. Thanks.

Find a flight then find a hotel. I use skyscanner for the flight.

That’s just for a weekend in a place though, are you wanting something else, like a tour or something?

Thanks is there a certain time when flights are cheaper should I leave it closer to may to book?
I'm looking at Rome so will want to go the coloseum and some other sites as well.

Love holidays or Expedia will give you lots of flight and hotel options.

No flight prices will generally go up nearer the time.

When we used to do cheap weekend getaways we used to not be wedded to a place. We used to check which flights left from the nearby airport on a Friday for example and then buy the cheapest flight from there. Then go on booking.com, and do some key criteria (e.g. for us it was we wanted private ensuite and at least 8+ rating). Then sort the accomodation from cheapest to most expensive and go with the cheapest that we are happy with.

To be honest I wouldn’t expect a weekend in Rome to be much cheaper.
£900 is £450 each, two nights in a hotel is easily £100 each per night and then a flight each way on a weekend is going to be another £100 each.
give or take a £50 or so dr ok ending n on flight times and quality of of hotel

Flights and hotels are often slightly cheaper midweek if you can take time off then you should get a cheaper flight and hotel deal or package.

Two nights would be nice but if at all possible I would do three or four nights in Rome (as sometimes with flight times you may not get to see or do much). Top tip stay somewhere central so you can see most of the sights during the day and at night lit up. Areas close to Campo Di Fiore/Piazza Navona areas work well for that. Have a realistic itineracy and ideally have a day to chill and soak up the culture.
