An MOT is pretty cheap. You must have had a lot wrong with your car unfortunately. A service usually around £250, MOT under £100.

VictoryOrDeath · 04/09/2024 17:26

The maximum MOT cost in England is £54.85, so the rest will be repairs to get your car to pass its MOT.

JoJothegerbil · 04/09/2024 17:33

MOT and service was £190 but I have a couple of advisories to sort so looking at £1k to fix! The parts needed are only available from the manufacturer so I can't get after-market cheaper parts annoyingly.

£45. Car only years old tho and low mileage

Shade17 · 04/09/2024 17:45

If you’re not a petrolhead then I’d always recommend getting a second opinion.

DreamW3aver · 04/09/2024 17:46

I don't think Ive ever paid more than £45 for the test, all garages round me charge pretty much a standard rate

Obviously the labour element of any work that needs to be done varies

HaveYouSeenRain · 04/09/2024 17:47

OP that’s impossible unless you have 15 cars. Did they do any extra repair work? www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/mot-test-fees

HaveYouSeenRain · 04/09/2024 17:47

There’s a maximum amount MOT test stations can charge. This depends on the type of vehicle.
The maximum fee for a car is £54.85 and £29.65 for a standard motorcycle.

ginasevern · 04/09/2024 17:58

I would imagine the OP means how much did you pay in total at your last MOT. I paid £380 (which included the MOT itself) and which is pretty much what I expect to pay but I do drive an 2007 car. £750 is a lot! How old is the car, is it a manual or automatic?

HeyPrestoAlakazam · 04/09/2024 18:03

Just under £55 for my MOT. They aren't legally allowed to charge more...It's 10 years old but was fine so no other work needed to keep it roadworthy.

Are you saying that this is how much you had to spend on repairs to get your car to pass it's MOT?

Floralnomad · 04/09/2024 18:10

I think mine was £45 , it didn’t need any work to pass

Lordofmyflies · 04/09/2024 18:14

£450. But it was a 3 year service at dealership and they through in the MOT for free

fluffiphlox · 04/09/2024 18:16

About £50. No work, no advisories. I had, however, had a massive service done about three months before.

Doggymummar · 04/09/2024 18:16

£54.85 is the price anywhere. If you needed work you can shop around

fortheveryfirsttime · 04/09/2024 18:17

£0. No work needed and they didn't charge for the test. I really hate MOTs so this was a huge relief.

£750 is a lot! Whether it's worth it depends on the age of the car I guess.

Rocknrollstar · 04/09/2024 18:23

We pay monthly to cover any work that needs doing.MOT was today and everything was fine. No parts to buy so cheap day.

So what happened to the money you'd already paid. I haven't heard of paying in advance for work that you don't know is going to be needed, is that what you mean?

Cheersmedears123 · 04/09/2024 19:59

£30 in total as it passed thankfully. Although I have a couple of advisories which need fixing before the next test so I guess it has cost me more.

My last car was written off in the MOT and I was left stuck at work, an hour away from home. That phone call was quite a shock.
