School Uniform

So today DD11 started Secondary School, during transition days in July all us parents were given the school Uniform policy which clearly stated the Uniform expected and in particular the length of skirt that would be appropriate for school, ie-knee-length or lower and no mini skirts would be permitted,Trousers are also an option. So as I drop DD off I see one of her classmates from Primary school who also starts year 7 today in a tiny skirt,so tiny I could see the gusset of her tights!,She's 11 ......
What goes through parents minds to think that this is an appropriate way to dress for school for an 11 year old?
It's not as if her mum dropped her off and after mum had gone the girl hiked her skirt up so it's shorter (as im sure many of us did when we were at school but theres short and theres short short!,the skirt was just about covering her bum),mum was there watching her walk into school and I just thought to myself wtf??

O think schools have better things to do then policing skirt lengths...

But at DDs school they wouldn't have made it past the gate. They have leeway for older girls who have grown since the skirt was bought, but not at beginning of Yr7.

My friend & her DD are the same.

her DD looks much older even without her make up & hair done, but obviously both have to be 'perfect' before she'll get in the car. Once 'done' including false eyelashes, she easily passes for 18. It's scary! Objectively she looks well groomed & stylish, not cheap & tarty, despite how micro her skirt is. The trend there is still for large handbags, not school bags,

the school accepts all of this, then gives them detentions for chewing gum 🙄🙄

my friend allows' her to do this because it's a battle she's not prepared to have. Her daughter would just refuse to go to school & my friend would rather have her in class than not.

the girls around here all have their skirts rolled up (in the traditional way🙄🤣) but one roll too far and there are loads of knickers on show, but more in the way of a 4 yo whose tucked their skirt into their pants by accident. I don't know why they don't tell each other

mot to mention the skirt are semi pleated, so the skirts stick out making them look like lampshades! 🤣🤣.

living next to a school is entertaining if nothing else

All the girls in my school wear tiny skirts (or trousers), including my DD. I hate it but there's more important things to worry about- she's doing really well, getting good grades and never been in trouble. Having a short skirt on doesn't affect their learning.
I would support the school in banning skirts though and have everyone in trousers!

I drove passed a school near me and a girl was walking along he path
her skirt was very very short and clingy so it was riding up and she had to keep pulling it down but it only just covered her bum. So basically it looked like she was just wearing pants and tights most of the time. I know we hold be able to wear whatever we want but it really didn’t look good or comfortable

Give it a couple of months and your daughter will be doing the same. And tying her jumper behind her back with a hair bobble.

Dts are going to y9 I've long given up. I used to do the same (not the jumper thing, that seems to be a new development!). If they want to risk a detention that's on them.

longdistanceclaraclara · 04/09/2024 11:55

@YeahComeOnThen yeah it's the lampshade look here too, they roll the flat part as far as they can and then the pleats stick out, they all wear Nike pros underneath as well.

Alongthepineconetrail · 04/09/2024 12:02

I was on a bus when a bunch of 6th formers came on wearing microminis & proceeded to walk up the stairs. You could see everything, it was hard not to see the colour of their underwear.

One little boy told his dm v loudly that he could see their knickers. The girls must have heard & started to pull their skirts down. It didn't make a difference though, it's not a classy look if your pants are on show.

DD(12)'s school is massively cracking down on skirts. DD wear trousers, always has, so she's not bothered, but we obviously get all the comms. From this term skirts must be A line, pleated or skater style, and knee length of longer. No tube skirts, no pencil skirts. If you arrive at school in an unsuitable skirt, then you can must borrow one from the office. This is where we're at, it's been phased in since last Easter. If there is continuing transgression in skirt appropriateness by half term, then school will introduce a logo'ed skirt.

MrBallensWife · 04/09/2024 16:52

Maybe I'm turning into my mother then 🤣🤣,I was just so shocked as to how short and barely there it was!,especially for an 11 year old girl.It looked bad enough from the back but when she turned around and I saw the gusset on her tights I was flabbergasted.
I know all teen girls will push the boundaries but at 11 they're still young children.
I remember walking round with the lampshade look too 🤣🤣.

i wish this lot would wear Nike pros. It's all thongs in bright colours, arse cheeks are going to be frozen! Maybe I can hand out some big woolly rompers?!

At DD's school the new head started cracking down on skirt suitability about 6 months ago. She gave 3 months notice, that - as per longstanding policy - school skirts must be knee length, and pleated or skater style, and non stretchy.

They don't specify supplier, or require them to be branded.

Girls arriving in inappropriate skirts are sent to the office to borrow a more suitable one for the day, and given a bunch of negative points.

DD has always worn trousers, but apparently this has massively improved appropriate skirt wearing.

lol! I see I've already responded to this thread!

At the school my niece attends the skirt should be no more than a credit card width above or below the knee. The uniform skirt is pleated. The only exception is for tiny Y7 whose skirts are actually too long when they started but it was the smallest size available. There were a few moans to start with but the girls soon got fed up with being made to change into a borrowed skirt of the correct length. They can wear trousers as an alternative if they wish.
