Are we due a revival of obscure Victorian names?

Just reading something where the protagonist is Alfrida. Her brother is Kenelm. I am really feeling both of them. I tried to persuade a niece to call her new son Sylvester a few months ago and I’m still feeling cross she didn’t leap on it. Is the zeitgeist moving towards these long-ignored names? Or maybe it is just me.
Let me know what names you would revive and please please if anyone has used a name like this recently would you share? I would LOVE to know.

Bedelia was variant on Bridget, used when people wanted to honour a family member without direct duplication - the sequence went Bridget, Biddy, Bedelia - and sometimes on to Delia and Dilly, hence Dilly as a pet name for Bridget.

Dilly itself is ripe for revival.

In my family tree, I found an Aunt Persus from sometime in the 1800s. She was also a member of the Temperance Society.
Names are fascinating

Misthios · 04/09/2024 12:03

Philadelphia is a great name! In my ancestry I have an Elfrida, Mehitable (maybe not so great on those two), Rosalie which is very pretty, Linton, Shadrack, Lebbeus, Sybella and Unity.

Didn't Boris Johnson use Wilfred? That would put me off :)

Overtheatlantic · 04/09/2024 12:06

Boris also has a daughter named Laura Lettice

I live close to a Victorian graveyard (walking my dog, I'm not weird) and as a PP said, the names are 90% John, James, Thomas, William, Alfred, Albert, Elizabeth, Anne, Katherine with the odd Samuel, Benjamin and Adelaide or Alexandra. I saw a Winifred and that was the most unusual one.
I guess that these might seem boring to a lot of people these days but I like good solid names. My two DD has names from that pool and there are a lot of variations or nicknames you can use. I have a less usual name and have to spell it every time.

Daughter at college with a Sylvian which I like

Yes yes

also euphemia

i love Sylvester because of the georgette heyer hero. And the cat.

love Wilfred, and septimus but not sure I could manage Epsibeth… fab to know it exists though. Thank you!!

I reread Sylvester yesterday!

Which other Heyer hero names should we be reviving? Oliver, Miles, Max, Gareth and Jasper are still in use. We might have trouble convincing people of Ivo or Waldo…

I have a Septimus and an Octavius. Yes, they were the seventh and eighth sons (no girls!)

I remember my gran having a friend called Decima. She was the 10th.

I was surprised how many Rosinas I came across when doing research using the census. Maybe that should have a come back? I also came across a Keziah (my 4x great grandmother) and a Kerenhappuch (who called her daughter Ann).

Keziah is quite popular in London! Esp in the Carribbean community

I know an 18 year old sylvie but I guess that's not as unique as Sylvian.

I bet the shadrack came from quite a religious home

Sorrow, like Tess of the Durberville's baby.

Poor baby 'Sorrow'

Buried under an empty jar of Keiller[?] Marmalade with wild flowers.

I just think of the sequinned disco queen, very good he was too. Sylvester doesn’t sound the least bit Victorian to me.

I like some of the Victorian names, Adelaide (seems more Edwardian), Albert.

luckydaytoday · 04/09/2024 12:23

I have a Hepzibah, Wilfreda, Ivydene, Colsford and Rosina in my family tree. There must have been a fashion for Anglo-Saxon names around the turn of the 20th century, as along with Maud, Edith and Cuthbert there's a great great uncle with the middle name Athelstan!

theruffles · 04/09/2024 12:24

While I'm not sure I'd use them, I love some of the more unusual Victorian names. There is a little boy in my DD's class called Clement, which I think is lovely.

I really wanted to call DD Lettice, but DH was having none of it.

Meet my twins Lettice and Cressida (Cress for short). And here’s my son Tom, short for Tomato.

oakleaffy · 04/09/2024 12:25

Jimberly for the win! {Female name}

That fine old Classic name.

Reminds me of the sex- abusing ,cantankerous Clement Freud. BBC presenter...What is it with BBC and historic Paedophile investigations??
A name can really have associations, for good or ill.

KnittedCardi · 04/09/2024 12:31

My grandmother was Bertha, her sister Thirza 😁

RetroTotty · 04/09/2024 12:39

Emerald. Plenty of Rubys and Pearls around, but few Emeralds.

My great grandmother was Blodwyn.

Anyone know any young Blodwyns?

I went to drama classes as a child with a Bodwyn. She would be 42 though, so not that young!

drudgewithagrudge · 04/09/2024 12:40

Kezia is in the Bible. She was one of Job's daughters.

Lettice is surely due a revival.

Overdue, surely - it would have been a perfect choice for girls born during the 49 days of Liz Truss' premiership😂

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/09/2024 12:43

Misery, Sorrow?

Maybe not
