@Backtoschoolbaby yes, if you are unhappy with a product they will refund you, I'm guessing it's in date?

bakewellbride · 04/09/2024 22:28

"High welfare" is meaningless and they're literally allowed to put it on the label despite the animals being in appalling conditions and treated horrifically. This is why spaghetti chicken is on the rise, it's just awful.

Think of all the chicken there is to buy in every single supermarket, restaurant etc but have you ever actually seen a chicken? We live near the countryside and I've yet to actually see a single chicken, they're all locked away in cages.

Thistooshallpass24 · 04/09/2024 22:39

I don't eat meat, I just pointed out that the op would get a refund I did not pass any other comment
@bakewellbride yes I've seen a chicken, had them as a child.( Pets several in a huge run)
You want to see/smell where eggs come from. 🤢

Backtoschoolbaby · 04/09/2024 22:42

@bakewellbride yes true, although a lot of birds had to come in for bird flu.

The chicken is so overweight and unhealthy that oxygen can't circulate around its body properly and that affects the texture of the meat - stringy / spaghetti like. It's grim.

Backtoschoolbaby · 04/09/2024 22:47

Awful.
I'd prefer to go back to the days when chicken was a special treat.
I just trusted wairose more than other places

My DM bought Waitrose higher welfare chicken breasts for me to cook and they were grim. I think Waitrose meat is no better than any of the other supermarkets now.

I choose to eat meat fewer times per week and try to buy from the local farmshop or, failing that, I'll buy free range or outdoor bred from Ocado. The quality of Ocado veg and meat outdoes Waitrose by miles in my view, despite being cheaper.

Oh dear lord that's disgusting.

'High welfare' is the way its treated when its alive; the water is more likely to be injected to plump up the meat, and that's a different issue.

samarrange · 04/09/2024 22:55

Higher-welfare only applies to the point of slaughter. (How much of a difference it makes is a separate matter.) It doesn't say anything about whether water is injected to bulk up the product after slaughter.

Now, you might expect that if they sell it as "higher-welfare" they also don't cheat on the weight like this, but that's probably "higher-welfare platinum" or some other marketing bollocks.

Lemonsoul58 · 24/11/2024 15:10

I completely agree. Bought Waitrose higher welfare chicken breasts yesterday and had to pour the water off them - ruined the dish I was making. Had the same issue with butcher's chicken, supposedly free range. Will use legs or whole chicken in future - never had a problem with that.
