Supposedly ’posh’ things you think are common *trigger warning this is light hearted*

Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan
Talking about exercising
Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram
Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’
Shopping in Space NK
Visiting Disney World
Listening to Classic FM

Not sure if this fits with the brief but people who post ‘New car day’ on FB with a picture of a coffee or glass of fizz in a car dealership.
I don’t think posh is the right word for this thread though. I’d say flash. Posh to me would be the aristocracy with all of their threadbare stuff and old money, even then it seems a bit of a lame term.

bag pipes

Grin

who the fuck thinks bagpipes are posh?

for that matter, who the fuck thinks they're common?

we're all just trying to stay out of the blast zone when piping is threatened

We need to write into the Rest is Politics and ask Alastair Campbell to adjudicate on this matter.

EI12 · 03/09/2024 20:51

I think all the ones you named are posh, they are not common. They are all middle class, no common person can afford them. The only posh thing which poor people do buy, and therefore it looks common, is a heavy gold charm bracelet with individual charms added on every year. I should know, because I have one and I am looking forward to adding a new charm this year too. It is a thing for people from my background.

Sorry I'm useless with these but I am hoping someone can help me with this, does anyone remember in the 90s posh bottles in kitchens, I think it was oil with peppers in, but in oval shapes? I always used to think anyone who had show oil was practically best pals with the queen.
I mentioned it to DP last week and he doesn't remember seeing them anywhere. He said his grandmother had a bath oil she never used and it was a posh bottle.
If anyone knows what I'm on about and can tell me if they were posh I'd be grateful.

Also I think the bottle lid often had twine around it or a ribbon?

Yes, they were usually bought on holiday as gifts no-one actually wanted. 😂

Detailed / clean cars (obviously not going the stables or the country estate enough).

Agree with PP - massive driveways with no greenery.

Dressing children in high end designer clothes. Little girls in big frocks and knee high socks with bows on 😆

This! Bloody awful.

You are so wrong. THIS is the last word:

https://uk.smnovella.com/collections/liquid-soaps

all liquid soap is drying and awful (and therefore common)

<gavel>

BarbaraHoward · 03/09/2024 20:51

It's all very "money talks, wealth whispers" isn't it. I have neither.

Anything ostentatiously labelled, anything putting appearances over others' comfort, basically anything flashy.

Babbahabba · 03/09/2024 20:51

You mean things that working class people think will make them look rich? Just another thinly veiled dig at the working class/a chance to look down your nose at them.

No one thinks giant blown up canvas family photos are posh. They might like them - each to their own, but no one thinks they're posh!!

Unless you've seen the Rose family from Schitts Creek family portrait...I must say I was impressed with that one!

LoveSandbanks · 03/09/2024 20:52

I love Molton brown hand wash (and shower gel) but I’m not aspiring to be posh.

wouldn’t be seen dead in m&s or Dubai and I wouldn’t even wear my dry robe on a dog walk never mind the school run!

we’ve got dogs so I’d encourage anyone that visits to keep their shoes ON!

Crushedcandy · 03/09/2024 20:53

Referring to items of clothing as a piece. Even if it’s from some upmarket label store it’s still a tee shirt. At what level of poshness does it become a piece?

ThomasPatrickKeatingsDegas · 03/09/2024 20:54

Also I wouldn’t say posh, that’s very middle class, rather ‘U’ and ‘Non U’.

AlleycatMarie · 03/09/2024 20:55

SpringKitten · 03/09/2024 20:15

Macaroon (or “macaron”) biscuits.

They are very different things though? My personal thought is macarons fit this category, but not macaroons!

Catmum23 · 03/09/2024 20:55

Nellieinthebarn · 03/09/2024 20:25

Giving a rats arse what anyone else thinks.

The poshest person I have ever met, real aristocratic old money, used to have bottles of HP sauce and own brand salad cream on the table. And her husband used to eat a takeaway curry with a hanky balanced on his head to soak up the sweat.

Being impressed by real aristocratic old money people not caring what people think (easy to be confident when you can get wherever you want based on money / social status.)

Definitely agree re posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram OP!

I refuse to believe that “old money” would spend £50 on a bottle of liquid soap

FIFTY FUCKING QUID???

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 03/09/2024 20:55

Using the word Chav thinking it makes you sound classy. It doesn't.

DestroyEverythingYouTouch · 03/09/2024 20:14

Forcing guests to take their shoes off at the door because you have a glaring white carpet that you obviously can't afford to have cleaned.

To be fair, you wouldn't have a glaring white carpet if you were 'posh'...

I don’t think that anybody uses the word chav to be classy.. quite the opposite.

AlleycatMarie · 03/09/2024 20:56

Wearing a designer (or any) tracksuit when flying

Solonga · 03/09/2024 20:57

People are just listing everything that is expensive

ShillyShallySherbet · 03/09/2024 20:57

Boxes of tissues?

One of my friends says I’m posh as I have a box of tissues, I said what do not posh people use to wipe their nose and she said toilet paper.

Range Rovers.
Eating at Miller and Carter.
Holidaying in Dubai.

Eating at Miller and Carter 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I've never been but it's not meant to be anywhere near high end is it?!

Edited

My gran was obsessed with “class” and had a charm bracelet like this. When she died, it became mine. Do I show my common roots whenever I wear it?
