Supposedly ’posh’ things you think are common *trigger warning this is light hearted*

Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan
Talking about exercising
Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram
Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’
Shopping in Space NK
Visiting Disney World

Prosecco can in fact be delicious.

Not that the delicious stuff is easy to find.

That's the real Italian stuff, not the sugary crap sold in most of our UK supermarkets. A conversation I had in Florence with a horrified waiter concluded thus:

'They sell it in Marks and Spencer? Issssss NOOO Prosecco!'

Uriahsnose · 04/09/2024 11:12

I found a plastic bag (or part of one) in my food at Miller and Carter (not my choice, work event).
I didn't find it even 'nice'. It was just a chain restaurant, albeit one with a bit more classy decor than Frankie and Benny's.

Fish knives
Saying desert
Any euphamism for lavatory!

What do posh people say instead of desert? Abscond? Maroon?

Wink

Lots of nationalities remove shoes in the house, so I'd think someone who was horrified by this was a Little Englander rather than posh.

putting the milk in first - this is a crime no? 😂

YES

My granny said so

PeachesForPeaches · 04/09/2024 10:59

Yes. Why are people so bothered about taking off their shoes? 😂 it’s not ‘posh’ (I hate that word!) to let guests leave them on.

I live in a major city where there is human and dog waste all over the pavements! There is no way anyone will wear shoes in my home.

I think people would realise if they'd stepped on dog poo & would obviously remove them at the door. Generally speaking it's rare to actually step on dog poo so along with the majority who wouldn't expect a guest to walk around their house in socks or bare feet my thoughts remain. It's like saying to a guest your dirty & my house is clean. As for expecting people who are all dressed up for a house party & have arrived in a taxi from their home, expecting them to remove shoes at the door is ridiculous.

Ralph Lauren towels in downstairs cloakroom
Designer bags
Hand soap that costs more than a weekly shop

Definitely! Bring a snob ain’t classy unless you’re being snobby about snobs ofc 😉

Yep

The word classy is about as un-classy as you can get though, and it’s snobbish, not snobby.

I think you missed an 's' and the point.

I think it comes from country estate life where the dogs have already trampled in the deer poo, rolled in fox poo, and as the carpet was laid in great grandfather’s era, ( and doing brilliant really; only threadbare in the doorways), there really isn’t much point taking off one’s wellies if just nipping in to the loo.

Oh I’ll have to have a look. I have had some fantastic prosecco in Italy, but failed to find it here.

If I lived in the countryside or a clean town then it would be different but the city I live in (not in the U.K.) is filthy. It’s not just poo - it’s urine, vomit, spit, bin juice. People automatically take their shoes off at the door, before I have to ask, and I do when I visit other peoples homes, especially if they have babies and children!

as a PP said, many cultures around the world take off their shoes before entering the home. It’s nothing to do with not being ‘posh’ 😂

Mumsnet seem to have such a reaction to this every time it is brought up. Weird.

here we go round the mulberry bush, the mulberry bush

Haunted me for years when I watched it as a child.

Fish knives???
Oh come on. When I got married 20+ years ago I got a set of "posh" cutlery including fish knives, I use them because otherwise, they'd be sad when all the other cutlery gets to go and be used and they would feel unloved. I refuse to give up my fish knives 😛

They are ‘terribly middle class’ ie not U.

But even if you care about that (I wouldn’t) they are often very pretty! I ate with some over the weekend.

I’ve had to scrub both dog poo (we don’t own a dog!) and what looked like goose poo off of the carpets up my stairs. On lots of stairs. Not fun, and both times brought in by someone who doesn’t reside here.

reminds me if when I lived in London and someone trod fox poo up every stair on cream carpet. I thought I’d have to replace it, it stunk for weeks!

Japan and South Korea have those special areas inside their front door where you take off your shoes.

My friend's elder brother was at school with him. I would say Bear Grylls is an outlier. Aristos are very sneery about his being an evangelical Christian (and baptising Russell Brand was "a step too far") and for his being a "showman" rather than an a broadcaster.

Bear Grylls is an absolute arsehole, this much I know.

Taking my dd for hot chocolate at F&M with a browse around the shop afterwards. I now realise that it’s an overpriced tourist trap but it’s still one of our favourite things to do and yes we feel a little bit posh while doing itSmile

Parkrun?!!! Parkrun is free, junior parkrun is free. How can it be seen as posh, literally anyone can go if there's one locally!

@Autumnalove not sure where you are but the one and only time I tried parkrun was the Hampstead Heath one.. my god did I feel out of place! Nearly all were posh yummy mummies in top to toe lululemon/sweaty Betty. Was a few years ago now to be fair but I was amazed how a free event was posh central

And splendid [and not so splendid] houses in the UK have a boot-room/utility room at the back to remove and store dirty footwear
