Supposedly ’posh’ things you think are common *trigger warning this is light hearted*

Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan
Talking about exercising
Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram
Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’
Shopping in Space NK
Visiting Disney World
Listening to Classic FM

I thought it was a carvery type place. I had no idea it was meant to be posh!

I’ve just realised I recently went to one (shows how much notice I took of where I was😁). It was for a special (but low key) occasion. It was quite nice but seemed expensive (I wasn’t paying). ‘Posh’ pub grub I guess.

Can someone explain the fascination with “old money” to me? Why is wealth you inherited from ancestors (who may have made it from exploiting serfs, slaves, colonies) seen as superior to wealth you earned yourself through business or a profession or a trade?

Fair point

nojudge · 04/09/2024 01:38

Um, yes? That was my point that seems to have whooshed over your head. But thanks anyway.

Thus the point about the 2014. Which is very good indeed.

Edited

Yes I got your point - at least if your point was the spelling was wrong, I did. I just was clarifying as wasn’t sure if all posters did. If you thought the glass and the champagne were spelt the same way it might not have been clear it wasn’t a pun.

Not having a TV
Milk jugs
Lofts

Loving this thread, it is truly hilarious because of the very mixed responses on it.

BunnyLake · 04/09/2024 10:05

@cerialkiller why are big driveways with no greenery thought of as posh?

I admit I don’t understand some of these, I must be living under a rock (just granite not a diamond).

Fair point

Yeah it’s a very fair point. They are good arguments that new money is in fact more to be admired. But this thread ( as I understood it) wasn’t
about wealth; it was about poshness.

ExpressCheckout · 04/09/2024 10:06

John Lewis
Afternoon tea
'Sourcing' anything
Designer dog breeds (e.g. cockapoo)
Glamping
Foreign holiday every year or more often
SUVs in town/city location
Island kitchens
Wearing sunglasses when talking (medical reasons excepted)
Garden 'offices' (i.e. sheds)
Hot tubs
Fire pits

bord · 04/09/2024 10:06

Not read the whole thread but

Designer clothes
Range rovers
Over done hair and make up/nails
Harrods

FinallyYouSaid · 04/09/2024 10:06

I don’t understand designer burger joints

Agree with this. If I'm going to spend decent money on a lovely meal, I'm not choosing a bloody burger 😂

Miller and Carter too. I've been once and it was...nice. No issues. But I really didn't understand what the big deal was supposed to be, I didn't identify anything particularly blow-you-away about my steak. I've had a steak just as nice from a Harvester tbh so considering the price difference I'd go there 😅.

Going to a Russell Group university
Having very tall children who 'eat like horses'
Charterhouse
Belfast sinks
Being related to a Freud
Skiing anywhere outside France
Having a food intolerance
Voting Tory
Shop bought engagement rings
Bill Nighy
Scotland

This post meets the brief the most in my opinion.

RedPalace · 04/09/2024 10:09

Fish knives???
Oh come on. When I got married 20+ years ago I got a set of "posh" cutlery including fish knives, I use them because otherwise, they'd be sad when all the other cutlery gets to go and be used and they would feel unloved. I refuse to give up my fish knives 😛

Danfromdownunder · 04/09/2024 10:09

I thought Bill Nighy was very posh! Consider this little convict schooled.

now I’m goi g to start asking questions. These are people or things I think are English level posh:

  • Helena Bonham Carter
  • Shooting weekends
  • Shopping in Knightsbridge
  • Big country estates with long driveways and stables and staff
  • Aga in your kitchen (in my dreams!)

But the poster who added Bill onto their list, clearly doesn't.

He seems posh to me, @Danfromdownunder!

I agree, this list is the best so far!

Posh people don't care & would think you v odd & mark you out as 'common'

Which demonstrates that it's not true that posh people don't care about that sort of thing and don't judge others and only care about making people comfortable

DeanElderberry · 04/09/2024 10:15

'Shop bought engagement rings' as opposed to what? Gemstones and metal stolen from colonised people by an ancestor and shaped into a ring by an enslaved craftsman?

Some of this stuff makes me very glad to be common, with a habit of buying things in shops and paying for them. Or doing without.

Family heirlooms. Engagement rings passed down possibly.

Don’t the aristocracy take diamonds out of their grandmother’s tiara and have those made into an engagement ring?

DestroyEverythingYouTouch · 03/09/2024 20:14

Forcing guests to take their shoes off at the door because you have a glaring white carpet that you obviously can't afford to have cleaned.

Oh yes! Definitely this. So naff.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 04/09/2024 09:09

I have. Tastes the same as my Dualit. But the Morphy Richards broke quickly. The Dualit will go forever. And is easy to fix if necessary.

The classic Dualit maybe. I had one for over twenty years (couldn’t be fixed). I bought another Dualit (not the classic) and it’s a bit rubbish (should have invested in the more expensive model). It’s still probably the ‘poshest’ thing I have in my house though 😁

ComeAgainPlease · 04/09/2024 10:20

I used to think new pillows, new duvet were luxuries ... now they are cheap as chips to replace and we do it a couple of times a year (dogs get old duvets in the back of the car)

DeanElderberry · 04/09/2024 10:20

Even an inherited ring might have come into the family's possession via a shop. So might grandmother's tiara. Unless the family were thieves - is that what makes people posh, larcenous ancestors?

I didn’t understand the shop bought engagement ring, is that meant to be posh (but isn’t)?

Although saying that, when I suggested the local second hand jeweller shop to my son (albeit far into the future with his gf), because they have some really beautiful old rings he looked horrified.
