My is 17 years old and I am utterly sick of it. It just won't die!

I've never bough a new one just because it is old. we a re in a super hard water area I'm astounded it's still standing

It's a Miele.

What do you do with a 17 year old machine that still works?

OP posts:

A few months old. My approx 6 year old one died, the repair man wouldn’t bother coming out to it when I explained the problem over the phone.

Stirmish · 03/09/2024 21:51

My Bosch dishwasher is 17 years old and still going strong and everything comes out sparkling still

My Neff oven is also 17 years old but I've had to change the heating element about 3 times

I'm on my 3rd washing machine and fridge freezer though but they've lasted longer than the others so fingers crossed they'll be around for a while

OddityOddityOdd · 03/09/2024 21:52

I've never had one that's last more than 5-6 yrs, maybe I should buy a Miele next time. My last tumble dryer was about 25 yrs old when I replaced it because I needed a condenser version.

cardibach · 03/09/2024 21:55

‘Manky’ in what way? It works. Don’t knock it. It’s a good thing.

iamyourequal · 03/09/2024 21:55

Try putting a single pillow in on a high spin wash. This killed one of ours. Apparently the uneven distribution of weight did it (seems plausible now, but it certainly didn’t occur to me at the time that might be a dumb thing to do).

SurpriseTwinPregnancy · 03/09/2024 21:58

Bosch washing machine is 8 years old and still going strong. Same with the Bosch dryer actually. Really happy with both of them and neither were particularly expensive.

Nellieinthebarn · 03/09/2024 22:03

Mines 12, its a fairly basic Zanussi, and is still going strong. I won't get rid of it until it dies.

Bjorkdidit · 03/09/2024 22:11

Sounds like our last fridge freezer, that was about 25 years old when we got rid of it, even though it still worked

I was curious as to how long it would last but it was costing a fortune in electricity.

The one we replaced it with had a stated annual consumption on the label that was less than a quarter of the old one.

missquiet · 03/09/2024 22:13

Mines 9 years old and it's going strong unfortunately! It's the last white appliance we have, the rest are black. I can't justify getting rid of it just to get a black one though.

dizzydizzydizzy · 03/09/2024 22:17

22yo Miele going strong.
OP, yours is a mere babe.

Hohofortherobbers · 03/09/2024 22:24

Mums 30 year old AEG was deemed irreparable this week. No parts available sadly, was good while it lasted. 😢

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 03/09/2024 22:29

Keep it OP. The guy who delivered my new one 3 years ago told me that they are definitely no longer made the same way. Plastic instead of steel, basically. Shorter lifespan.

LittleYellowCloth · 03/09/2024 22:33

Our Whirlpool washer-dryer is 11 years old and counting - no change in performance even though we’re in a hard water area. It’s just started to sound as though the bushes might be going but it has been brilliant and I consider any extra time we get out of it now a bonus.

My new Miele looks every bit as sturdy as the old one. The weight is about the same too at a bit over 200 pounds.

Abitboring · 03/09/2024 22:42

I chucked out my zanussi washer dryer a year ago after ten years because I hated it. The spinning cycle did my head in with it's high pitched noise and I found it too small at 5kg I think.

I replaced it with a Samsung which is 9kg I think. I still enjoy doing my laundry again.

Honestly OP life is too short. Get a new mid range washing machine. Maybe the Miele can go to a good cause to ease your conscience. I bet someone will snap it up for free in no time.

I didn't get a Miele or Bosch for that reason, knowing I'll start to hate it before it's time.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 03/09/2024 22:42

Mine was a Bosch. However the guy ran a shop, and that was his general opinion.

ScottBakula · 03/09/2024 22:45

I am not sure , I think it's about 10/12 years old its a Indesit.
My fridge frezzer is about the same age , that's a beko.
The previous ones were both Indesit and about 20 ish years old .
I'd definitely get Indesit again .
My gas oven is 2nd hand I have only had it about 9 months , that's also a beko.

newnamethanks · 03/09/2024 22:47

I've just bought a new one. Hoover? Hotpoint ? It's got a control panel that should be in an aeroplane and a scary steam function that I dont understand. 2 weeks in; haven't felt confident enough to try to use it yet.

I keep most things until they break. Including the absolutely shit Shark vacuum. Now that I wish would die,

BettyBardMacDonald · 03/09/2024 22:58

27 years.

TellerTuesday · 03/09/2024 23:02

Mine is 2 years and 9 months so I predict it will do its last cycle in around 3 months and 1 week if the pattern continues. Just long enough to go out of warranty.

MellersSmellers · 03/09/2024 23:07

I wish i had your problem! 😂
How about you gift it to someone on Freecycle then you can buy another, guilt-free, knowing it is still in service somewhere

suki1964 · 03/09/2024 23:07

25/30 years and still hanging on

Miele, the brushes are finally giving up and we cant get parts now so maybe, just maybe we can say goodbye in the new year

Seriously its outlived numerous tvs, a micro, 2 dishwashers, 2 cookers and 2 vacuums. And it still washes well but the energy efficiency isnt ideal

HappydaysArehere · 03/09/2024 23:31

Just popped in to say that I believe the new Miele products are not as reliable as the old ones. I too trusted Miele and had good experiences so once again invested in a lovely expensive Miele fridge/freezer. First thing was that the two parts did not operate completely separately. Whereas my first one had. Then I had a problem with water at the bottom of the fridge. Of course the drainage was checked, machine pulled out and then thought the fridge wasn’t cold enough although the digital temperature consistently said 4. Eventually decided that a 7 year old very expensive fridge was worth a visit from the engineer.I opted to pay the higher charge which would be a final payment and would cover a year.About £260. Engineer came and removed a section of the back and removed a large block of ice from inside. Sat with a computer doing checks. The temperature was soon as it should be and showing 4. That lasted a couple of hours before it was apparent that the fridge was warming up. I was able to ring the engineer who assured me that the fridge was fine and that the two salter temperature monitors were not accurate. Later he told me to book another appointment. I did this and because the engineer’s report had not found a problem I was given a appointment in three weeks time. My dd came. Was horrified that my several cartons of yoghurt etc were at room temperature. She grabbed them all and put them in the food dustbin. So the next day she took me to JL and I bought a replacement Bosch for £550. Never again. If this one plays up I will just get another one. Also had a Miele dishwasher which lasted the 8 years that was usual so nothing special. However, I have a Siemens washing machine which is into its tenth year so crossing fingers and already hoping I can replace it with one so good. Just saying that because something lasts for years may not mean the replacement will be so long lived.
