Has anyone tried any of the plant based delivery services?

The last one is freezer ready meals I think, the others are more like gousto or hello fresh but plantbased.

Just wondered if anyone has any experience of them? I am so tempted to try them but I am a fairly good cook and don't want to be disappointed!

Incredible. That planty one has no prices whatsoever. Some sort of subscription from what I can see.

I'll look at the others.

plantsandwich · 03/09/2024 19:07

I noticed that! I meant to put it in the OP. Hmm. I quite like the look of the 'planthood' one but not enough to bite the bullet yet. Wonder what they're like portion-wise.

Reviving this as we've been doing Planthood for a few months now and love it (I just idly searched to see if anyone else does it).

The portions are very generous, we often have a portion's worth of leftovers.

It's expensive which is the main drawback but I love everything else about it. Can't see myself stopping any time soon.

Ginkypig · 24/11/2024 16:00

I tried adding something from Planty to the basket.

doing that gives you the option to click on a small question mark to see pricing

this is the screenshot when I did that.

gives an idea towards pricing

AllPlants is (probably) closing down - had an email the other day.

plantsandwich · 24/11/2024 17:33

There's not very many purely plant-based people out there really so it isn't surprising (and those that are, often are very into cooking, and then all of the other reasons why someone wouldn't favour using this type of service).

plantsandwich · 24/11/2024 17:34

Thank you for that, regarding the pricing @Ginkypig. Good to know on the portion sizes too @buybuysellsell

We do planthood - it’s very good (we do it 3 X a week just to make cooking easier on busy nights) and we love to cook and are quite hard to please!

ChaoticCrumble · 24/11/2024 17:39

I am not vegan but have used planty twice now (albeit a year apart). I find them useful when my husband's away and I have energy to cook for the kids but not myself! I was able to pause the service after my first order.

I have bought with an offer both times, but ordered nine dishes to get a cheaper option. Delivery came when they said.

The portions are decent - if you have a small appetite you might get a dinner and leftovers out of it.

Some of the meals are lovely, others weren't to my taste but okay. I'm annoyed as I made no notes with my first order, though I remember a truffle recipe that was waaaayyy too truffley for me. I couldn't eat it.

This time I've had 4/9 so far:

Korean Bibimbap v nice - would order two next time
thai (I think sweet potato) little too spicy but flavourful,
mac cheese blah but filling,
jerk tofu very nice

When I made my latest order I wasn't able to find any 'real' reviews online.

ChaoticCrumble · 24/11/2024 17:39

(so if any one else has ordered from there keen to know what is good - there are no reviews on their site!)

TooFondOfBooks · 29/11/2024 11:37

I think it was probably selling AllPlants in supermarkets that did for them - I’ve been using them since a long hospital admission in summer of 2019.

I’m limited by food allergies as well as being vegan so I fear I’d not be much help with Planty - especially as I like their Mac & No Cheese 😄

ChaoticCrumble · 05/12/2024 18:51

@TooFondOfBooks you should definitely share your thoughts - as I said I struggled to find genuine reviewers so future searchers could at least have this thread. You will be more valuable precisely because I'm not vegan.

After all, if I can have cheese any time I want, is it any wonder I wasn't bowled over by the vegan one?

Anyway since last post I had a pearl barley bacon bake that was 'fine' but wouldn't reorder.

Tonight I had the sweet & sour tempeh which was sweet with a bit of spicy, and probably would reorder.

Can't have many left - maybe cauli korma.

Realise this is a slightly old thread but just reviving it because i wanted to rave about planthood - started out trying it as a one-off with a discount code, then monthly, then fortnightly and now get the boxes weekly.

I’m not vegan, not even veggie but was keen to cut down on meat and dairy for health and environmental reasons.

Most importantly the food is just really, really good. I’ve not had a meal I didn’t like and the best have been restaurant-standard, lick-the-plate-clean good.

They’re also incredibly easy to prepare. You get everything you need for a meal together in a paper bag (unlike some other recipe boxes where you have to spend 5 mins rummaging around for the right sachets before you start) and because it’s based around ready made sauces often the meals are more assembly. They aim for <15mins cooking time and that’s normally fairly realistic.

I found with other recipe boxes I sometimes end up without the time or headspace to prepare the meals I’ve ordered but I never struggle with planthood and because the meals are always yummy I feel motivated to cook them. So I’ve never wasted a meal (unlike Gousto, Hello Fresh etc - I have cupboards and freezer full of bits of meals I never had time to prepare).

Portion sizes are typically generous - really common to get 3 portions from a 2-person recipe so I have leftovers for lunch.

They are a bit pricier per meal than other recipe boxes I’ve tried but given how good the food is, portion sizes, convenience it feels like good value and because I am not wasting anything or impulse-buying at the supermarket I don’t think my food bill is really any higher than before.

The health/environmental benefits of eating vegan are just a bonus really at this point - it’s the fact it’s delicious and easy that has made me cancel all the other recipe boxes I gave dabbled with to go all-in on planthood.

Only negative is their website is a bit basic but apparently they’re working on it.

(I realise this probably sounds like I am being paid by them but I’m just a big fan!)

ScreentimeInTheMeantime · 09/02/2025 11:52

Echoing @RaisinFlapjack. We have been doing planthood for about a month and it’s really good. The meals are much tastier than we expected. We are not vegan, so frankly we’re expecting to want to add a little cheese or butter… it’s not necessary with these meals. Portion sizes are generous but my husband and I are (very) big eaters so we do tend to finish them off (ie no leftovers).

It is not cheap but seems to be reducing our food waste, as the “big shop” only covers a few evening meals now and we are less likely to waste things. It has introduced a much wider variety of vegetables and beans etc into our regular diet. Would recommend a try, especially if you can find an introductory deal

Glad I'm not the only fan! We still get the boxes weekly and there's no going back, if they ever stopped trading I would be bereft!

buybuysellsell · 10/02/2025 20:45

Me too! I went as far as checking their accounts on Companies House the other day! I would invest in a heartbeat. I'm eating so much more veg now with zero effort and it's all delicious.

@RaisinFlapjack I am so tempted to try Planthood for a few weeks. I am not vegan but feel like I need to make some changes to my diet and many of their meals look really fab. Unfortunately due to financing two kids through uni I couldn't do this long term. Please can you tell me if you get a recipe card with each meal and if this could make it easier to replicate at home buying the ingredients myself? * *

MiloMinderbinder925 · 12/06/2025 08:47

How do these subscriptions work? Do they drop off all the meals at once or daily? What's included? Do they contain all the ingredients or are you expected to contribute?

Planthood wouldn’t be a great one for trying to DIY the recipes yourself as typically the meal kit will include 1 or 2 prepared sauces or marinades which would be hard to replicate. What you get is instructions rather than a true “from scratch” recipe because they’ve already done half the work.

So for example last night I had a spring minestrone which required me to cook some pasta and veg and add this to a prepared soup broth and top with a fresh herb pesto. There’s no recipe for the broth or the pesto, which are the the bits that require the timed effort, multiple ingredients etc.

You might find you get inspiration though - like I would v rarely have made a meal based around tofu and gas never tried tempeh and I am such a convert to both now. So it’s definitely widened my culinary horizons!

RaisinFlapjack · 12/06/2025 10:17

@MiloMinderbinder925

For planthood we get a box delivered weekly that has four large paper meal bags inside (I think you can choose more or less than this but four works for us). Box contains ice packs so food stays chilled until you can put it in the fridge.

Each bag has everything you need to assemble the meal - typically some prepared fresh sauces or marinades, garnishes, some vegetables, tofu or beans.

When you are ready to cook, I just take out the bag from the fridge, pull up the instructions on my phone which outline what equipment you need (usually basic stuff like a couple of saucepans or a roasting tin). 15-20mins later dinner is served! I’ve never had any issues with food delivered at the beginning of the week not being perfectly fresh at the end.

Thanks. I'm very interested but wasn't really sure how it works. I might give it a go.

Appreciate this is an old thread but was searching planthood reviews and it popped up for me so thought would add to the info!

I am one box into a subscription now. Found first box of meals quick to do, healthy and way tastier than what I normally cook. I am not a great chef but even I couldn't get this wrong.

Would love to find the same for less money as it feels like a lot to me, but sticking with it. My hope is that it stops me buying more than I need in the weekly shop and gets rid of my temptation to order takeaway on the nights I can't face cooking, so could break even

We tried planthood and it was exactly how I'd like to eat, but my picky husband and son did not like any of it so we haven't carried on. I'd recommend it though!
