Uni survival kit

Redhairandtubs · 03/09/2024 17:40

My niece is off to uni for the first time in a couple of weeks. I want to make her a 'uni survival kit', a mix of essentials plus some fun bits and treats. Looking for some ideas of what to include (needs to all fit into a shoe box!)

Also, I know myself sister is really going to struggle as she ls the last one to leave the nest. Any ideas for things I could pop into a bag of treats for her?

Thank you!

If you look on Etsy you can get "Open me when ...." Stickers especially silly designed for this sort of thing. You could use these for inspiration. I would say chocolate, alcohol, condoms, hangover kit would be a good start for contents.

Lots of gift cards.

Mainly to supermarkets and meal delivery services, to be honest. It'll seem like such a naff present at first, but when when it's just before exams, it's dark everyday and she has 60p left in her overdraft, it'll be a godsend

Couple of gift cards for Just Eat, Costa etc

If you're close, a little sentimental keyring or knick knack

Mini first aid kit with basic painkillers, plasters etc

Some sweets, chocolate and tea coffee with nice mug

A journal /notepad and a name pen

This is so sweet.

Cook book or basic recipes?

Water bottle or takeaway coffee cup?

Gift card for Costa?

Postits and pens?

Something soppy to cuddle?

Usb stick?

Oh another idea, halfway through the terms could you do her a big food shop? Sort of an IOU? When I was in uni I hated doing the big shop (tins, pasta etc) because getting them home was such a pain

Gift cards are brilliant. I got my DD M&S or Waitrose as well as usual cheaper food shops so she could buy herself a few treats . Also Amazon gift cards .

Condoms!
it won’t fit in a shoe box, but I was so grateful that my DM gave me an under the bed storage box full of shelf stable foods. Tuna, cans of veggie curry, microwave rice sachets, soups, sweetcorn, noodles, pasta, beans etc
it meant when I inevitably ran out of money I always knew I had a few meals I could make that although we’re basic filled me up, and weren’t terrible.
You could put a couple of those bachelors ‘pasta n sauce’ sachets in, you just boil them with water and it’s a meal, and they’re slim and would fit in a box easily. Plus it’s not like a gift card for a supermarket that they will definitely use to buy alcohol! lol

I agree gift cards for food delivery treats. A Tesco, Asda or Morrisons gift card whichever is near to her. A basic First Aid kit include Strepsils for sore throats. Costa card. Toby Carvery card so she can get a nice roast dinner if there is one near to her.

@CraigBrown please be careful wth the popcorn. Ours caught alight early into the microwaving and I had to run outside with the microwave itself as by then flames were coming out. I've never bought the stuff again..I was so glad that I was watching it cook and I didn't leave it unattended.

I'm getting my dd a luxury early advent calendar. Gifts my family members have given are a multi pack of Pot Noodles - part of every student's stable diet, apparently. A monthly beer money standing order each month, but I know that's not in everyone's budget. Gifts have also included a mini coffee machine, a mini airfryer, luxury shower products in a caddy, a nice holdall for weekend visits home.
