Car warranty question...

Whichcar · 03/09/2024 15:44

Sorry, really boring question but I thought someone more knowledgeable may be able to help.

I'm test driving 2 cara tomorrow at Motorpoint. Need one asap due to having no car!

I'm going to be rest driving a Nissan Qashkai and Hyundai i20. Both very different cars and can't decide whether to go for a newer spec i20 or 3 year old Qashqai which is bigger...

Anyway, my question...the Qashqai is out of warranty as Nissan do 3 year warranty. The man in Motorpoint suggested I take out an extended warranty (presumably with them) but it's just over a £1000!
The car is £14,999 and with warranty £16,000!

So...is it necessary? It seems like a lot.
Thank you in advance.

I wouldnt touch the Nissan with a shitty stick.Completely unreliable sack of shit.

Buy something else.

i20 is small, which is no good if you need space.

I work for a garage
Check what the warranty covers and where it can be used

It's up to you really but say for example the engine went or the car fell apart or stopped working (not likely but you get the idea) can you afford to pay for the repairs?

I suppose I'm wondering if its just a sales ploy!
Also if I'm spending over £1000 on a 2021 plate Qashqai because it's a year out of warranty, I may as well spend the extra £1000 on a 2022 model! That way I get a newer car and it still has a year warranty.

Oh no, don't say that! I'm sick to death of looking at cars. Everyone has been telling me how good Nissan are!

I bought a 2014 Hyundai I10 in 2020 and its brilliant. Great cars. Mine had very low mileage.

Only thing to be aware of is if you do lots of short journeys then brakes may wear quicker. Probably same for all cars.

Please do research.

Nissan are not good, or reliable.

They are shit. And with good reason!

Buying a car for £15k they should be throwing in the warranty for free !!

How many miles has it done ? Cars these days should be able to do thousands of miles before things start to go. Never driven a Nissan but had the Hyundai I30 as a courtesy car a few years ago and it ran ok.

Whichcar · 03/09/2024 20:31

I'm honestly just so confused!
Ideally I want something 2/3 years old and no more than £15,000 so some options are limited.

Any recommendations?

I previously had a Suzuki Swft, so I'd like something with a bigger boot and a bit more space in the back. Ideally I'd go for a Tuscon or Sportage but they are out of my price range. I don't really need anything huge but mid sized.

Disregarding the car, third party (not manufacturer) warranties are rarely worth it. So many exclusions and will look for any way out of paying for anything. I'm sure there's plenty of reviews out there for whatever company they use.

DonttouchthatLarry · 03/09/2024 20:52

I'd look at Skoda Karoqs for that budget. My 12 year old Yeti has been problem free and done 105k miles. Husband wants me to upgrade it but I don't see the point until it dies.

suburburban · 03/09/2024 21:04

I went to a Nissan garage and was shocked how many add one to the original price there were.

yoshiblue · 03/09/2024 21:07

Can you afford a Honda Civic? I think my husband bought one for £17k 2-3 years old. Very reliable and will last ages. He's planning to keep his 10+ years and his mum was running a very old one with minimal issues.

BarbaraHoward · 03/09/2024 21:11

I'd get a Hyundai Tucson over a Nissan Qashqai. Should be affordable if you can afford the Qashqai, and has a longer warranty.

We had terrible trouble with our Tucson (very unlucky, if you look it up they're very reliable) but it was all covered under warranty. We had a family member's Qashqai while it was off the road and hated it - as did she, she has now swapped it for a RAV4 (which is lovely but probably over budget, it was for us anyway).

Storynanny1 · 03/09/2024 21:12

I had a Hyundai i20 from new til about 3 years ago all through my years of looking after grandchildren . They are not that small. I could get 2 car seats on the back plus a small adult if necessary and the boot was big enough for umbrella stroller, shopping even a balance bike and folded up scooter.
Much more spacious than my current Ford Fiesta

It was extremely reliable. One adult child had the i30 which seems a lot bigger

HowardTJMoon · 03/09/2024 21:13

Non-factory warranties often (but not always) have a lot of restrictions over what they'll actually cover. You'd need to go through the contract really carefully before seeing if it's worth the money.

I must say that I've also heard really poor things about Nissans. Lots of engine and gearbox issues. You might get lucky - the manual gearbox is supposed to be notably better than the auto, for instance - but it's a risk. There's a reason why the factory warranties are only three years.

For £15K you can get a reasonably recent Kia Sportage that comes with a 7 year warranty. Or, if you liked your Swift, a Suzuki SX4 S-Cross also comes with a 7 year warranty provided it's been Suzuki dealer serviced.

Doggymummar · 03/09/2024 21:16

Kua Sportage at that price. Fab cars very reliable

Don’t touch the Nissan

hang on. They are a dealer, they have to cover a fair amount

this link is a really good one explaining their responsibility to you.

you can also buy warranty’s yourself from lots of companies, warranty direct, rac and aa all do them. But do check small print. Garages don’t always like working with them as paperwork is a nightmare

Just as an example, here's a 2021 Sportage with only 23,000 miles for £15K - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202408072618639?sort=relevance&twcs=true&advertising-location=at_cars&make=Kia&model=Sportage&postcode=w1a%201aa&price-from=12000&price-to=15000&year-to=2021&fromsra

That's a car that'll have four years of warranty left, full dealer service history and all the options that most people need.
