Ahh! Nine year old and broken leg. Non-screen based ideas to help us stop going mad?!

My nine year old has just broken his leg! Which is a disaster as he is a very active kid.

Can anyone help me with non screen based ideas to stop him from going bonkers? (we’ve got the screen-based ones covered!)

Oh no, poor kid! Is he able to walk at all? Is he into crafts, or Lego? Crack out the board games? Perhaps take him out for a special lunch or something. Guess he will be back to school this week so will be busy soon?

Lego

Semi joking - give him some dumbbells and let him work off energy that way?

Magformer type toys are really addictive and easy to play with. He might like playdoh or air dry clay. A big jigsaw? Velcro darts?

A really intense craft project that you do over time like a model airplane or warhammer type things.

10+ Lego (the HP ones look great!)

Making his own board game

Writing/drawing his own comic - get friends involved

Filming pretend/real YouTube videos

Making and decorating a cake

Teach him knitting and/or crochet

QuestionableMouse · 03/09/2024 12:41

Air dry clay and paint for the things he makes

Check out the Baker Ross craft kits, they have all sorts of things he could choose from

Technic Lego. It’s trickier than the regular Lego so takes longer to make which sounds just what you need!!

You can buy some pretty intricate paint by numbers nowadays. They look really impressive when you finish them!

Usbourne puzzle adventures/choose your own adventure type books?

redtrain123 · 03/09/2024 13:05

Colouring books - maybe the more adult ones (ie psychedelic cats, not ‘adult adult’!)

raspberry pi

re-design all the premier league football kits

model plane kits

Keyboard -teach himself how to play

persisted · 03/09/2024 13:15

A book of how to make origami or paper aeroplanes and lots of paper.
Those wood kits that you press out and are like 3 d puzzles.

What are his interests? I'd probably be looking at how to make models of the solar system, or volcanoes or something. Try the Science museum shop for interesting stuff.

I can't it to load from google but see if you can find an online version of the Cub Scout badges, that might give you some ideas that are age appropriate.

mbosnz · 03/09/2024 13:55

Board games, solitaire, photography?

StressyDepressy · 03/09/2024 14:01

I’ve not done it but someone else I know has - Disney has an Animate with me feature on Disney plus. Yes it’s screen based 😂 but it’s drawing skills and an art class etc really.

He’s a good age to learn chess too.

Ariela · 03/09/2024 14:01

Knitting. If it's good enough for Tom Daley...

StressyDepressy · 03/09/2024 14:02

My 9yo has learnt a rubix cube through YouTube and a bit of adult support (my husband!)

that’s been a great ongoing hobby as there are lots of different types of cubes once you learn a 3x3

museumum · 03/09/2024 14:04

My 10ur old ds got a Spirograph set for the summer and really enjoyed it.

Just4thisthreadtoday · 03/09/2024 14:06

Oh poor kid. What did he do??

He's usually active, what does he do when he can.

Definitely get mates around.
