Naples paired with Rome?

Is that a good combination? I’m taking my early twenties nieces and they want to Airbnb. I’ve found a gorgeous B and B in Naples and I was thinking three nights there and four in Rome? Will I regret missing the coast? Should we do a day trip from Naples? I’m all about the food. I thought I’d book it in January. Well I’ll pay for the accomodation and they can get their own cheap flights. Any suggestions on where to stay or an itinerary?

Naples wouldn't be my first choice of the Italian cities to stay for a few days but for Pompeii.

Rome - Vatican, Trevi Fountain.

Florence is lovely. Siena also nice.

Naples is seedy.

Blueuggboots · 02/09/2024 20:07

I felt uncomfortable in Naples. It's not a particularly nice place.

Duckinglunacy · 02/09/2024 20:07

Just done five nights in Rome and absolutely loved it. So much to see and do, and although we packed it all in I know we missed bits. I’d like to go to Naples for Pompeii but I’d possibly stay a bit further down the coast

weegiemum · 02/09/2024 20:09

Loved Naples!

Then there's Pompeii, mt Vesuvius, sorrento, capri, Pozzuoli.

Naples is a bit rough round the edges but the vibe is great and the food to die for!

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 02/09/2024 20:09

I’ve only ever passed through Naples, but have heard it’s interesting in parts.

We have just done Rome and Sorrento, if you wanted somewhere coastal.

We did Pompeii from Rome years ago and this time from Sorrento. Also went to Capri from here too.

Sgtmajormummy · 02/09/2024 20:11

DH and DD are there for a week at the moment, having a wonderful time in spite of the heat. I’m dog sitting at home.
They’ve sent me pictures of their food (jealous) and say the people are so welcoming. DD, born and raised in Northern Italy, says she wants to move there and I can’t blame her…
They’re without a car but have done day trips to Pompeii and Regia di Caserta by train and with a pre- booked guide.
If it’s your first time visiting Italy, maybe just visit Rome or Naples and spend more time relaxing. Beware, you need to book Rome attractions like the Vatican and the Colosseum well in advance.
I’m sure if you look below this thread there’ll be links to other, similar chats.

Sgtmajormummy · 02/09/2024 20:17

Sorry, I didn’t specify that DH and DD are in Naples!

I’ve been to Cinque Terre and that coast twice was lucky enough to have a friend there. I’ve been quite sick and might be even next year. Rome is on my to do list. They are a mix of working and another still at uni, that one might just drop in, I want good food and I don’t want to be ripped off. No driving involved. It’s true I won’t beable to run around from place to place. Will need lots of snack breaks. Anyone done air bnb in Rome? If we combined it with a beach where would be the best place to fly to?

I like it! It's a really interesting place with tons to see.

Have also done Naples paired with Rome, took the Frecciarossa.

We stopped at Naples whilst on a cruise. It was incredibly dirty in places and we were hounded a lot. Interesting in parts but we were glad that we there for only 1 day.

Pompeii is worth it though

worrisomeasset · 02/09/2024 22:44

Naples is a huge sprawling city and I reckon visitors’ impressions will vary depending on whereabouts in the city they stayed. We stayed in the Historic Centre a couple of years ago and had a fantastic time. There were plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars very close to our apartment and the best pizzas you’ll ever have could be bought for just a few euros. I didn’t notice any seediness and we felt completely safe in the busy streets at all times.

ExitPursuedByABare · 02/09/2024 22:49

Same here. Best pizza ever on a plastic table in a neon lit takeaway. Just round the corner from the religious tat shops passing actual barefoot tonsured monks in full habit. Stayed in a Bishop’s Palace.

BitOutOfPractice · 02/09/2024 22:49

You know Naples is by the sea don’t you? It’s on the, well, the Bay of Naples. 😬

the food in Naples is fabulous. The city is great but very full on and a Bit bonkers.

Daytrips - the obvious is Pomei. If you only have a day to go to Sorrento, go by boat. The local train is, well, charming but very rickety, unreliable, slow and busy

How about Bologna to go with Rome? Italians consider it to be the food capital of Italy and it certainly lives up to that billing.

Wherever you go you’ll have a great time I’m sure.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/09/2024 23:19

You can easily spend a whole week in Rome and still not have seen nearly as much as you'd have liked to.

And imo similar if you base yourself in eg sorrento - from there there's Naples, Capri, Pompeii. Herculaneum, the amalfi coast, Paestum .... depends what you all like doing I guess.

This is what I was looking at in Naples. Is this a good are? www.booking.com/hotel/it/borgo-vergini-garden-b-amp-b.en-gb.html?label=gen173nr-1FCAsocUIcYm9yZ28tdmVyZ2luaS1nYXJkZW4tYi1hbXAtYkgJWARoUIgBApgBCbgBB8gBDdgBAegBAfgBAogCAagCA7gC-8vXtgbAAgHSAiQ4OGIxOWQyNy1hODM3LTQ3YjctOTk4ZC0yMTIzMjM4NThkZmPYAgXgAgE&aid=304142&ucfs=1&arphpl=1&checkin=2025-05-19&checkout=2025-05-22&dest_id=-122902&dest_type=city&group_adults=4&req_adults=4&no_rooms=1&group_children=0&req_children=0&hpos=1&hapos=1&sr_order=popularity&srpvid=00c5738d816707b0&srepoch=1725294369&all_sr_blocks=246790904_210404639_4_1_0&highlighted_blocks=246790904_210404639_4_1_0&matching_block_id=246790904_210404639_4_1_0&sr_pri_blocks=246790904_210404639_4_1_0__50304&from_sustainable_property_sr=1

Naples is great. Yes there are some rougher areas but it also has a lot going from it. You are right on the sea there.

Maybe take a ferry over to Ischia or Proceda one day if you want "quainter". You can just go down to the main port and buy tickets there.

eish · 03/09/2024 07:46

@ExitPursuedByABare a fellow Naples lover, hello! I love Naples too. It has a rougher feel to it yes but I fell in love with it (perhaps because I was living in Florence at the time so loved the contrast).
