Speeding penalty

Hi, I’ve just had a call off my mother. She was caught speeding. 43 in 30 zone. Yes, I know, very foolish, dangerous. She is very worried she will have to go to court. I’ve never had a speeding ticket and don’t know how this all works. Will she have to go to court? She has no points or anything. Has anyone experience of this? What happened? ( if you would like to answer I hope she has to go to court, I hope she gets her license taken away etc then please note I respect your opinion, but am asking for factual experiences- not what you would like to happen )

My husband was caught doing 47 in a 30... very very foolish of him. 3 points and a £60 fine.. no offer of a speed awareness course but no court either.

TerfTalking · 02/09/2024 18:21

No she won’t, she’ll likely get a speed awareness course. DS did the same recently twice in two days, no excuse but due to a change in the speed limit on a certain road being reduced with new layout.

he got a SAC for one and three points for the other.

Nearlyadoctor · 02/09/2024 18:30

Unlikely she’ll get a SAC that much over the limit. I think most police areas limit it to 37mph , so most likely 3 points and a fine which here is £120 .

@greycatmoth yes it was March - I think you can look at each police force to see their limits and fines. Mum is in the wrong but also it’s a just Cash cow.

LIZS · 02/09/2024 18:59

She can plead guilty by post. Pay fine and get points.

FuzzyDiva · 02/09/2024 19:02

I’m pretty sure it will be points and a fine as well. To do a speed awareness course, you need to be only marginally over the limit.

Regardless, she’ll receive a notification in the post shortly and it will explain her options. I’d feel confident she can respond by post if she is accepting the charge.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 02/09/2024 19:31

It'll all be done by post (assuming she doesn't want to fight it). No Court appearance.

Doubt if she'll get a Speed Awareness Course at that speed in a 30mph zone. Probably 3 points and a fine.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 02/09/2024 19:40

I think its 42 in a 30 zone so she'd just missed out on a course if that is the case

Had a look and yeah
"42 mph in a 30 mph area"..is when you'd be considered for one so more likely points and fine

A cash cow that ultimately saves lives :)

Bluevelvetsofa · 02/09/2024 19:43

I thought SAC was for offences within a small percentage of the limit. 35 in a 30 limit, for example.

daisychain01 · 02/09/2024 20:01

The letter will start off talking about Court. It then goes on to give the option of paying a fine and points applied on the offender's driving license to avoid court.

so in short, your DM won't have to go to court if she relinquishes her driving licence to have the points added to her license, plus pays the fine.

Nearlyadoctor · 02/09/2024 20:01

Devon & Cornwall is £100 not £120 - my mistake ( It was my son 31 who got caught )

You don’t relinquish your license, it’s all electronic these days. (Voice of experience, unfortunately Blush)
