Making a long ferry trip soon. Any tips for sea sickness? Thanks.

I would just ask at the pharmacy for some strong anti-sickness medication that you can buy over-the-counter. I have dimenhydrate but I’m not sure that it’s available in this country. If I’m going on a boat which is the worst thing for me I would always make sure I’ve lined my stomach with something dry like bread or cereal before I travel. And try and see out!

Thanks! Sounds like a plan.

Advice I got from people who cruised regularly were travel bands and eating an apple (which I was skeptical about but it did settle the nausea)

defnotadomesticgoddess · 02/09/2024 18:17

Kwells or stugeron depending how long the trip is. I use stugeron for longer trips where I might need to take another dose when the first one runs out

I think Sturgeron is the strongest you can get in England. The bands are pointless IME.

Salt and vinegar crisps, ginger nut biscuits and drink dry ginger. Spend as much time looking out at the horizon as you can. 25 years working at sea and I still get it sometimes and these are the only things that have ever helped me. Never been able to get on with sea sick tablets.

Both Kwells and Stugeron work for me - I think you can take both at the same time, but do check with the pharmacist

Ask your GP for scopoderm patches. The are small round patches that go behind your ear and last for 3 days. Same drug as in kwells but work much better. If I ever go on a ferry ever again that would be my go to.

Many years ago when I joined the Merchant Navy, I was told the best cure was to go and sit under a tree.

HTH.

Grin I'll be sure to take one with me.

Thanks all! Will ask at the chemist's, I think.

Oh good luck :) I suffer terribly from motion sickness and twice ended up in hospital on a drip. I'm on really strong prescription medicine anyway as so many things set mine off (eg swings, cars, buses, pools, boats) and use it at least twice a week just to cope with life.

I've just done a 6 hour ferry crossing and even drugged up to my eyeballs I'm still recovering 2 days after the trip and feeling very green. No amount of otc medicine, bands, ginger, patches or any other remedies work for me 🥲

I do hope you will have better luck than me and that you have a lovely trip 🩷

Definitely recommend Stugeron having tried many other options.
Wrist bands were a complete waste of money.
Good luck!

Also worth booking a cabin for the day.
It's a quiet space and you can have a lie down or nap, along with your own bathroom facilities if things don't go well.
Used to be very reasonably priced.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/09/2024 13:52

Cabins already fully booked for our 8 hr return trip, unfortunately. The outgoing one is much shorter so am hoping for the best.
