My almost 14 year old daughter

My daughter is almost 14 she has had some symptoms for about 2 months dizziness, nausea, feeling cold, feeling faint she actually fainted too. I thought it could be low iron or b12 even though she has a very good diet leafy veg red meat etc. she’s been on multi vitamins around 7 weeks
she has gotten a lot worse over the last week but more so since Friday.
she has a GP appointment for later this afternoon she hates the docs as she was a very sickly child in and out of hospital with her asthma and chest so was prodded and poked a lot.
what could it be the likely suspect is anemia or low b12 despite the vitamins as I know sometimes the one you buy over the counter are not strong enough if the levels are super low
she’s even canceled todays riding lesson and that’s unheard of as she’s obsessed so I’m pretty worried

fingers crossed it's something simple like needing some iron tablets. I used to get dizzy and palpitations and felt awful when I found out I was also very anaemic.

Thank you I hope so 🤞

Could it be anxiety?

She isn't pregnant is she?

Dd was similar at 14 (and also rode!)

She was very low on iron. Had an injection then prescribed pills

She isn't pregnant is she?

Definitely not she’s on her period right now

Does she have heavy periods? That would contribute to anaemia. Poor thing.

Jadeleigh196 · 02/09/2024 17:34

Perhaps
-Iron deficient anaemia
-Pernicious anaemia (inability to absorb b12) was your daughter born prematurely? As this can be a contributing factor.

I imagine they will check her thyroid levels too but perhaps ask--I had similar symptoms to this and had an underactive thyroid diagnosed at 18.

My daughter has pretty much identical from almost as soon as starting her periods... Her symptoms were unbearable. She had the implant on drs advice to regulate hormones. Stopped within 8 weeks

Another possibility is POTS

GP is a good call.

Feeling cold is often associated with hypothyroidism.
I had low B12, was one point inside the range and was told normal but I felt faint, breathless to the point of air hunger which is apparently classic low B12, faint. GP wouldn’t do anything so I bought B12 and learnt to inject myself. Within weeks I was completely different.

Mine had a milderversion of this. I gave her vitamins and iron in liquid form (from Boots). Still the same. She got worst when her periods became stronger (she is a bit older and I reckon she started being properly fertile around then). I booked her with the Doctor, blood tests were done (after a heart monitoring, blood pressure and vitals were taken as she suddenly felt really weak and dizzy and fainting, just before the date we had booked). Blood tests came back just borderline on iron. Rest ok. She had the supplements and feeling better now.
Low iron can make you feel really weak. Also, just in case, you do need vitamin C to absorb iron efficiently, we need vitamin C. It is good to squeeze a bit of lemon in food/ salad for the meal, or drink lemon water or orange juice with your meal. Also, no tea with your meal or straight after the meal.
I hope she feels better soon!

Bagpuss2022 · 02/09/2024 18:24

Thanks all the doctor was really good she’s having a blood test for literally everything on Thursday gave her magic cream as she’s extremely anxious of needles.
he did her blood sugars and they were fine and he’s also prescribed strong iron tablets for 3 months I’m surprised he did that before the results of the blood tests.
she feels dreadful she’s missed riding and isn’t having her favourite roast dinner and has gone for a sleep

If the iron tablets cause her tummy and digestive troubles for more than a week (nausea, diarrhoea) , don’t be shy about going back to the GP. They have different formulations she can try of iron tablets because some people tolerate one sort more than another sort.
