Tooth extraction tomorrow - calm me down

Hi everyone, I am absolutely terrified I feel sick.

I'm getting my broken tooth extracted tomorrow, all that's really there is a root. The tooth is completely cut off at my gum line. There's remaining tooth up in the gum and I'm having it extracted I am seriously scared.

My dentist has referred me to a specialist dentistry because in some cases the tooth can slip up in to the check instead of coming down because it's so far up.

I suffer with anxiety and panic attacks and the dentist environment gives me another level of anxiety.

My anxiety is that bad I won't accept laughing gas or general anesthetic. Im terrified of the procedure but im scared incase I take a panic attack.

Have any of you had it done before? Im hoping it doesn't take too long. Im scared !!!!!!

Is it an upper tooth? From the way you write it sounds like. My consultant dental surgeon told me upper extractions are much easier. They come out like champagne corks were his exact words.

I had a very tricky wisdom tooth extracted from the bottom with just a numbing injection and it was so much easier than I’d built it up in my mind to be. Do you like listening to podcasts? My best advice is to take headphones and put something relaxing on, be it music or the radio or even something like a guided meditation. Helps take your mind off it.

If your that anxious why not take what they are offering it will calm you down ? It will be over before you know it but I would at least take the gas x

I had a tooth out last year and I really wound myself up. Seriously, I'm sitting in the chair as tense as anything and I didn't know it had been removed, felt such an idiot. Try deep, slow breathing and just think how relieved you will be when it's done.

3beesinmybonnet · 02/09/2024 12:03

My dentist prescribes me one very low dose Diazepam for my anxiety around fillings, so you could maybe ask for that.

Whothefuckdoesthat · 02/09/2024 12:04

I‘ve had the same thing. And I built myself up into such a state that I was convinced I was going to walk into a room full of diggers and drillers. And the most I felt was some pressure. Not painful. Just like she was pushing my tooth, rather than pulling it. I don’t remember any pain. The worst bit was gargling with warm salt water and remembering not to poke my tongue in the gap.

Take some earphones with you, maybe a stress ball to keep squeezing. Close your eyes. Count your toes (sounds insane, but it’s difficult to feel your middle toes lifting up to be counted, so you have to concentrate on it. And if you’re concentrating on your toes, your brain will be too busy to be thinking about panicking)

I have had a number of teeth taken out, have never had pain, they are very good at these procedures now.

DirtyDensDog · 02/09/2024 16:34

I was in the same boat this time last year. I had got myself into such a state beforehand.

I promise you I felt no pain and the tooth was out in under a minute. It was a little sore after but I didn't need pain killers.

The relief that you will feel once it's all done is immense.

Best of luck to you, 💐

I had 5 really difficult teeth removed with the dentist grunting and yanking. I didn't care. I couldn't feel a thing. The local anaesthetic didn't wear off for ages.

awaynboilyurheid · 02/09/2024 16:44

I had to have a tooth extracted during Covid, I’m sure it could have been saved but no dentists were available and the antibiotics I did get didn’t work so my dentist told me to go to the Dental hospital.
It was scary because everywhere was deserted due to Covid and they had full PPE on etc , but even though I was scared and took headphones thinking I needed distraction my tooth was out in minutes it really wasn’t anywhere as bad as I had thought! It doesn’t take long and like someone else says pops out very quick!

I accompanied my DS11 for his teeth extraction last week (had two removed and needs another 2 in a couple of weeks). You will be absolutely fine. Don't look at the equipment when you walk in. Close your eyes when you lie in the chair. You'll feel a small scratch for the local anaesthetic and that should be all. You will only feel pressure as they get to work but no pain. As soon as you feel the slightest bit of pain, let them know straight away. They will top up the anaesthetic. DS is nervous about going back for the next two extractions but hasn't flat out refused to go back. Recovery was relatively easy, first 12 hours we kept him topped up with paracetamol (but to be honest he wasn't really in much pain) he was back to eating soft foods by the next day one side of his mouth.

Good luck!

helpfulperson · 02/09/2024 17:03

Another one here who found it much better than I expected.

Therunecaster · 02/09/2024 17:32

I had my upper wisdom tooth out on Friday. No pain, very little anxiety and no real pain afterwards. Good luck

LegArmpits · 02/09/2024 17:40

I had a broken tooth Op over lockdowns and just ignored it for years. That was a large top molar as well, eventually it got infected and I thought I was going to get a brain infection from it 🙈😂 so I went to local dental school.

I won't lie, I was in the chair a long time with a brilliant student and his amazing tutor and it was a difficult extraction (for them) but absolutely no pain for me. Even with stitches there was no pain. I'd go as far as to say it was quite exhilarating afterwards, knowing I'd finally sorted it out!

Be kind to yourself. Good luck!

DirtyDensDog · 03/09/2024 07:17

Good luck today. What time is your appointment ?

Sipperskipper · 03/09/2024 07:33

Embarrassingly, I’ve had about 5 tooth extractions. Absolutely terrified of the dentist, so just couldn’t go for checkups etc. Extraction is 10000 less frightening and uncomfortable than a filling, certainly for me. I would choose it any day over a filling! Good luck.

alwaysomethlng · 03/09/2024 12:32

Hi everyone!

Thanks so much for telling me your experiences.

I just had it done and I can't believe how much I worked myself up over nothing. It was literally 2 minutes. I did feel it a little bit but nothing major !

I'm so proud I did it

Well done. That's amazing.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 03/09/2024 16:18

Well done, OP! You must be so relieved!

An ex partner of mine was shaking with nerves when he had to have a tooth extracted, I held his hand and he said "let me know when you start" - and the dentist said "it's out!" It was so straightforward. The worst bit was the injection.

Incidentally, I always get them to numb my gum with anesthetic gel before the injection. They always did this when I was a child so I can't see why they shouldn't do it now!

helpfulperson · 03/09/2024 18:46

Good to hear. It is strange how its hyped up to be so bad and yet almost everyone on here said it wasn't as bad as they expected.
