Did/do you know people who were called by their surname only?

As in the person was addressed and answered to people saying their surname

I only say this because a boy I went to school with was know this way. He liked it.

Yes my (adult) son has quite few friends who are called by their surname, or a shortened version of their surname, or their surname with a Y added on the end! I often forget what their actual names are.

Known a good few Smithy's if that counts

I call my DH by his surname quite a lot

I did when I was with my Ex, they were friends from an all boys school, I think it came from
the masters really & just stuck.

I think at DH’s secondary school, most boys addressed one another by their surnames. And it wasn’t a Higgs-Boson Minor type of game bstitutuin.

For us. It was because there were 2 people in the class with the same first name. So one of them was called by his surname only in the end.

At secondary the boys were normally called by their surname or nickname. Often the nickname was something from their surname, like the "Smithy" example above. Millers were normally "Windy" for example.

I know a few people now who are known by nickname from surname. Some are because they don't like their first name or it's one where people tend to pronounce it wrong. Some I don't know, but everyone calls them by that name. And one says it's to annoy his brother, although I suspect he's joking because his brother lives in another country.

Not so much in my school days, but my husband went to an all boys school where there were several James, johns, peters etc. so they mostly became known by surnames which then changed over the years with syllables aged or dropped, y added etc.

I thought if funny when I met one friend called Peter, and wondered why he had the privilege of being known as his first name but his last name was peters and he was just another James.
