If you don’t drink coffee, what do you have at home for guests?

Not really having a clue we have tended to buy in some kind of premium instant (is that an oxymoron?) but been wondering if we should upgrade to a cafetière or a machine.
We don’t often have guests but got a few things coming up in the next couple of months and we usually host Christmas.

Instant.

I'm not buying a coffee machine for the odd occasion we have a coffee drinking guest.

I suppose if you have the budget and space then you could get a guest coffee machine though!

A nice instant

I have a filter coffee machine as my DM likes it when she comes to stay but tbh it rarely gets used. I steal sachets from any hotels I stay in and use those. 😂 or buy a small tub of instant.

HappyDane · 31/08/2024 10:40

I would get a reasonably priced filter machine and some mid-range coffee (ground). That's good enough for guests IMO and won't be too expensive for something you won't use any other time.

HappyDane · 31/08/2024 10:41

Stove top is a good option too. I'd avoid cafetiere, personally, as some people don't like coffee made that way.

exprecis · 31/08/2024 10:41

I would get a cafetiere - not expensive and easy to store

Caterina99 · 31/08/2024 10:41

I’d buy a jar of instant

Moier · 31/08/2024 10:42

Jar of instant.
I love the smell of coffee.. don't like the taste .
I only drink decaff tea.

turkeyboots · 31/08/2024 10:45

Ask your visitors to bring their own coffee? Do a morning coffee shop run when they visit? M&S do coffee bags (like a tea bag) which I use for camping.

No need for you to be buying machines, and few people I know who like coffee would like being offered a cup of instant coffee.

Alwaysoneoddsock · 31/08/2024 10:45

Coffee bags are good. I use them for work and they are much better than instant.

Onesundaymorning · 31/08/2024 10:47

I'm a coffee drinker and love a real coffee but I wouldn't expect a non-coffee drinker to have that available just for me. I'd be very happy with Azeera ('nice instant') or a normal freeze dried instant. Not a sachet coffee though. Those are horrible! I wouldn't say that to them though and would get on and drink it.

Storytimetime · 31/08/2024 10:47

Good instant is absolutely fine.

I dislike going to people’s houses who only have filter coffee paraphernalia. I don’t want to create all that faff in someone else’s home but do want a hot drink! (Friends with small children / family where making drinks as a guest is okay!)

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 31/08/2024 10:48

I’ve got a coffee machine for guests because we have quite a lot of guests and none of them drink instant. So it gets used quite a lot.

Ducal · 31/08/2024 10:48

I’m thinking of guests who are staying, so don’t want to be doing multiple coffee runs.

I will investigate stove top ones. Would need one that works with an induction hob.

Not much of a consensus so far!

I would get a premium instant, one of those in small tins for about £3.50 on offer

EBearhug · 31/08/2024 10:50

I have a cafetiere and coffee for it in the freezer. I also have coffee bags. Most people seem to like real coffee. But one boyfriend preferred having strong instant.

Gotabadfeelingaboutthis · 31/08/2024 10:51

Taylors coffee bags are nice (like teabags but with coffee in) and easy to use and store. Also won't go off. If you buy ground/filter coffee it won't keep so not ideal for occasional guests imo.
As an avid coffee drinker, decent instant (like azera) would be absolutely fine as well though.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 31/08/2024 10:51

I'd get a cafetière.

Solonga · 31/08/2024 10:51

If you get coffee making stuff, you will have to store it somewhere and still buy coffee as the ground stuff goes off a lot quicker when opened

pizzaHeart · 31/08/2024 10:53

Small jar of good instant.
Not Tesco but there is no need to go to an Italian deli, any decent brand currently on offer will be fine.

99RedBallonz · 31/08/2024 10:53

The stove top ones are for making expresso aren't they? They seem to have a very small capacity in the standard size. I'd opt for a cafetiere as you can get a few cups out of it.

Or if I wanted something a bit fancier, an aeropress. As these are small and cheap and make good coffee.

Disclaimer, not a coffee drinker, but live with one and have made many cups of coffee.

Invisimamma · 31/08/2024 10:53

I'm a coffee drinker and do have a machine. When we go away I take Azera instant and it's the best one I've found.

HappyDane · 31/08/2024 10:54

Oh I'd totally forgotten about the coffee filter mug-top things! Don't know what they're called...buy those. Best option I think as you can just get them in when people are visiting.
