That's all I have to say really. <wistful sigh>

Imo it's the over reliance on the internet that killed off that happy, carefree, innocent time.

When I have a "digital detox" some of the carefree, in the moment feelings come back until I go into town and it's full of empty units and unhappy, anxious people glued to their screens.

Nuggetnuggety · 31/08/2024 10:21

I just remember raving, getting hot & sweaty, not caring what I looked like & having a great time. No one to film me or upload onto social media.

InsensibleMe · 31/08/2024 10:24

I think there is one of these threads about the 70’s. And the 80’s. And the 60’s. I wonder what will come next? 🫤

Totally agree with this. I was a child for all of the 90s . Recently I was thinking of getting a phone with no internet just WhatsApp because I am concerned about how much time I spend on my phone. I can’t remember what it was like having to research things without a phone !

AdviceNeeded2024 · 31/08/2024 10:27

Loved the 90’s, I still love the music and fashion now.

Loved how carefree it was with my mates, weekends spent getting the bus to a new town or city and having to figure out ourselves how to get back. Looking forward to going out shopping and buying outrageous makeup (shiny silver and lilac lipgloss anyone 😂) and platforms. Everyone had their own individual style. Buying magazines, especially for the little free gifts you used to get with them.

Sneaking into pubs underage in town and drinking Castaway’s that were £1.97 so I always had a pocket full of 2p and 1p coins.

No pressure to look a certain way (there wasn’t in my friendship group) or the never ending Social Media documentation that is a way of life now. No being glued to phones and not talking. I agree with a PP I think the over reliance on the internet has ruined a lot of things.

It was amazing. I would love to go back to those days, such a shame.

ThatsNotMyDuck · 31/08/2024 10:29

I’ve recently discovered that Rimmel are selling heather shimmer and coffee shimmer lipstick. Still just as good!

I doubt you will get one about the 00s/10s because of the financial crash which really impacted younger people (pre that it was good). And since we never actually recovered from that.

izzy2076 · 31/08/2024 10:32

That's not a good song OP. 'Love you more' however...

1clavdivs · 31/08/2024 10:33

The 90s had an amazing feel to them. I suspect though that really it was my 20s that had an amazing feel to them and I'm projecting.

Nuggetnuggety · 31/08/2024 10:33

I can’t remember what it was like having to research things without a phone !

I was thinking about this on holiday recently & there was a recent thread about the annoyance of having to prebook things months in advance. It’s so much easier to research things & not get lost etc but then you miss out on the getting lost, finding something random & wonderful, not having a plan & just going with the flow.

Do you miss the 90s, or do you miss being young?

I was a teen in the 90s and there were a lot of good things that I miss, but there is also an awful lot that I was glad to see the back of!

I was 12 for the Millennium so wouldn’t say I ‘grew up in the 90s’, but being a child then was fabulous - lots of freedom to play out, Spice Girls/S Club, cool fashion (which was somehow still fairly innocent and not too sexualised/expensive - Tammy Girl!), parents were more laidback and tbh I think happier. Lots of happy memories of being taken to their friends houses on Friday night where I would play with their kids until midnight while the adults got on the beers. Now it would be a social services job I expect…

Yes the expectation that we can have everything instantly and not have to wait for anything has made us all more short tempered and angry in my opinion

Retrogamer · 31/08/2024 10:43

I was a child in the 90's obviously everyone has a different experience, here is mine.

There were some good things

  • TV - Saturday morning cartoons. Gladiators, Friday night sitcoms.
  • Playing out with friends on my bike and returning home when the street lights come on.
  • No phone/fast speed Internet *Tazos

There were some bad things

  • boredom, just sitting there with nothing to do. *money, we had none. *I had a lot of mental health issues that would have been picked up at school these days. I was just left to cope through it (and almost didnt).
BurntBroccoli · 31/08/2024 10:56

Yes, I enjoyed the 90s in my 20s. Great music and everything seemed so positive.

BurntBroccoli · 31/08/2024 10:59

We could actually afford to buy our first homes too unlike most of today's generation 😞
I think that's the crux of where it's all gone wrong really.

Nuggetnuggety · 31/08/2024 11:04

One of my former colleagues bought a house for 100k in the late 90s in Hackney. Worth more than 2m now. It’s crazy!

Nuggetnuggety · 31/08/2024 11:05

And they bought it on a retail workers salary, interest only mortgage & something like 95% deposit.

BurntBroccoli · 31/08/2024 11:08

Nuggetnuggety · 31/08/2024 09:05

There was hope & a buzz, Cool Britannia etc. We don’t have that now, talking to young people.

Yes there definitely was. I remember wearing a Union Jack abstract style floaty top that I loved.

Wouldn't dare wear anything like that these days due to being perceived as far right.

This is pretty sad but occasionally I marvel how I can just watch any film I want, find a song, print off a photo I’ve just taken, get some dinner or shopping delivered & it feels like a little treat. My dc don’t appreciate it at all.

Nuggetnuggety · 31/08/2024 11:11

something like 95% deposit.

should say 5% deposit. 95% LTV

Desperatefornachos · 31/08/2024 11:29

I was 13 to 23 in the 90’s, I could cry thinking back to that time, it’s like some kind of faraway dream, I so wish I could return to that time

Not keen on the song though, sorry op

izzy2076 · 31/08/2024 10:32

The whole album is good. But I agree Love You More is one of the better tracks. Oh happy days. Sweaty and dancing all night. Everyone loved up and full of joy and music.

Yes there was a slightly darker side to the 90s (the drugs, the heroin ‘chic’, the obsession with skinny, the too
much too soon amount of freedom kids had) but oh gosh what a time to be a teen/a young person. And there is a darker side to every era.

One word sums up that era for me: hedonistic.

Desperatefornachos · 31/08/2024 13:40

It was such an exciting time, yes we were exposed to a lot, very early, but it also just felt sort of safe and fun
