Stove top expresso coffee pots

Anyone use these?

I like a very good cup of coffee. I’m rarely impressed. Nespresso machine coffees are pretty crap TBH.

Do you rate stove top expresso machines?

I was given a moka pot as a gift a few years back, I've tried several times with it but to me the coffee tastes burnt. I'm clearly doing something wrong because so many others rave about them but it was consigned to the back of the cupboard here !

Maybe you left it on too long?

I actually find myself feeling sorry for people who offer me coffee from their very expensive fancy machine 🤣

I bought one recently after reading a thread on here and I bloody love it! Mine is too small though (2 cup) and I need a bigger one.

And then you need another one even bigger. And hen you probably need an in between one. Resistance is futile

CranfordScones · 30/08/2024 18:48

I've raved about them on here before. They're very simple so nothing to go wrong - you can get spares when the seal / filter wear out. They're quick and easy to clean, and make great coffee.

I left long enough for there to be coffee in it....

braaaiiins · 30/08/2024 19:29

The coffee is fine but it always seems insanely wasteful in energy terms so i never use it. I just boil the kettle and use a coffee dripper.

Can you please tell me what a patina is?

I love mine.

You will need a stainless steel one if you have an induction hob. The trad Mokka ones won’t work.

For anyone who has to make too much because their pot is big: you can freeze the extra coffee in an ice cube tray for future i
use in an espresso martini.

Used to have one and it made fantastic coffee only problem was I bought a large one that made too much for one person and ended up drinking very large cups of espresso and would be buzzing!

Whereas I've got a one cup one which is too small - just a tiny espresso cup.

Sgtmajormummy · 30/08/2024 19:41

A “Patina” is like a stain or tarnishing of coffee into the metal.
Here’s an electric coffee pot- the Italian version of the Teasmaid!

They’re great for espresso. My Moka pot makes lovely espresso (I add water to have it as an Americano), but it does take a while to come through.

I always use boiling water in the bottom part, speeds things up nicely 😊

https://www.johnlewis.com/bialetti-coffee-maker-induction-hob-plate-adapter-13cm/p6268977 + aluminium one.

My parents had one of these from the 1950s when they got married.

Pedallleur · 30/08/2024 19:59

If you can get one a stainless alessi sapper is nice. Steel beats aluminium in my opinion. James Hoffman goes into mokka pots on you tube. It's about catching the coffee before it overheats and using cold water to halt the brewing

Sgtmajormummy · 30/08/2024 20:08

James Hoffman is a real sweetie. I could listen to him all day…

I love my Bialetti Moka pot. Use it everyday. I've got my eye on the electric one next as you can set a timer for morning coffee and don't have to keep an eye on the stove.

I use the Bialetti coffee too. I buy in bulk 3 for offers from the outlet stores when I go to Italy.

You can get Bialetti coffee from John Lewis, it's my favourite coffee too!

Cotswoldmama · 30/08/2024 20:19

I have 2 mokka pots they're great my dad bought me one when I went uni and I've never looked back. I've got a small one which makes enough for 2 cups abd a larger one that does 4 cups.

Haha! It's like you already know me 🤣

ZiggyZowie · 30/08/2024 20:26

Tried them, also tried filter coffee but the best machine is my 15 bar espresso machine which makes coffee as good as any cafe.
It has a frother for the milk but I prefer to heat my milk in microwave and then put the espresso coffee on top. Still get the "creme" topping but not too much
A. 15 bar machine can be bought for around £40 and I find the coffee strong, full flavoured and never bitter which it can be from stove top or filter.
I buy Happy Belly coffee from Amazon, just as good as Lavazza but cheaper🙂

Goatblu · 30/08/2024 20:32

I've had a Bialetti pot for years. It still makes the best espresso when I can be bothered to get it out of the cupboard. Never had a problem with the seals or basket either.

Zonder · 30/08/2024 21:47

This is my problem with many coffee machines. I want better than a cafe!

So do I - I sit it on a teatowel and use that to screw it on so as not to burn my hands . Coffee in literally minutes.

ForGreyKoala · 31/08/2024 01:55

I loved using mine. Unfortunately I have to be very careful drinking coffee now so my Bialetti moka lingers at the back of the cupboard. 😭

This is what I do. Then put the pot on a medium heat.

I was also guilty of packing down the ground coffee but the recommendation I was given in the store was to be generous but loose when filling the filter cup.

Justleaveitblankthen · 31/08/2024 06:47

Yep, it's the only way I drink my Café Lungo (refuse to say Americano) 😂
