Is selling clothes online worth it?

I'm decluttering my closet and was inspired by a recent thread to look at selling my clothes. I have some nice Hobbs dresses but on Vinted they are all listed for about £10. That doesn't seem particularly worth it? Is there is a better/ easier way to do it?

If you don't need the money donate them, it is quite a lot of effort. I need the money so I make the effort.

Send them to Thrift - they take a % but give you vouchers to spend on their site. So no hassle even if it doesn’t make you any cash
You can donate the profit to charity if you want

I used to sell a lot of my old stuff on eBay but now it seems not to sell, I think you have to pay to promote your items or eBay hides them, Vinted is ok but some people make really silly offers so it can be a pain. Although I did just sell a pair of unworn boots which was worth it as I’d never worn them and hate to throw things out that are expensive and unworn, such a waste of money. Vinted listing I find much easier than eBay too.

The value of items has gone down considerably since I've been selling online, because everyone got in on it and has cleared their closets out. I think you have to think- are these dresses current in their shape, are they a winter colour and if so, you can price a little more, but if they are not then they may not sell at all.

If you don't need £30 by selling three of them, then it's probably not worth it.

I think of it more like an investment scheme, I sell things on Vinted, I buy things on Vinted, hence I'm not losing too much!

BetterInColour · 15/11/2024 19:52

My dd sells on DePop, but by far the best interface is Vinted. Ebay's new interface for preloved is awful, I can't find anything!

Moreshroomsplease · 15/11/2024 19:54

It’s a lot of effort for hardly any reward. People won’t pay reasonable prices for most used clothes. I still upload a lot but only get £2-4 per item, hardly worth it.

BarbaraVineFan · 15/11/2024 19:54

I would like to try this, but have no time to get to the post office. Is it possible to get vinted parcels collected from home at all?

You can book royal mail collection online, it's free, you don't have to go to the Post Office.

Tarnishedbutton · 15/11/2024 20:01

I haven't only because I'd be banned after a week I'm so disorganised at the best of times so I know I would be absolutely awful at it.
I would only have my child's to sell but I am much happier to hand them on to another mum I know. Paid for it in good karma I hope.

PollyPeep · 15/11/2024 20:07

For me it wasn't worth the hassle. Once the site's fee was taken out (10% I think?) and I'd managed to find a bag to package it up and gone down to the post office to scan the qr code and send it off, I just didn't feel like the minimal money I was getting was worth my time and effort. I'd sell a dress for £7 and end up getting £5.70 for what amounted to at least an hour's work taking photos of the dress, making a listing, admin, organising postage, packaging and walking down to the post office, with the time pressure hanging over me to send it within 3 days as well.

MiriamCavendale · 15/11/2024 20:07

I’m selling stuff that I’ll never wear again and will donate otherwise. So the initial purchase is a sunk cost. Just sold a Hobbs dress for £20, but mostly sell things for a few pounds. It all adds up and I’ve made £150 this month which is all going into a Christmas fund. So, you won’t get rich but feels worth it to me 😊

calishire · 15/11/2024 20:12

I've found selling on vinted and eBay worth it BUT only for sort to specialist items. Yesterday I sold a nursing jumper for example. Much easier to sell than your average run of the mill jumper because there's too much competition in that category.

Saschka · 15/11/2024 20:13

Depends on what you are selling. DBro is the type of person to buy a Paul Smith shirt, and never wear it or take the tags off. Definitely worth selling stuff like that. Most other stuff sells for about 10% of what you paid for it, so depends on how much you need that £3.

calishire · 15/11/2024 20:13

The upload process is fast. My plan at the minute is upload to vinted. If it doesn't sell, chuck it on eBay for a low reserve. If no luck after that, donate,

BG2015 · 15/11/2024 20:26

I've been selling bits and pieces on Vinted for about 18 months and made I've made £500 selling stuff.

I have a rule that if I buy something (rare these days ) I have to sell something I don't need.

YouOKHun · 15/11/2024 20:29

I'm finding eBay hopeless recently as a private seller. In the last couple of months things that would have easily sold a few months ago have just stopped selling, and there isn't much traffic either. They've started offering private sellers like me free of charge selling but that's made it worse. I think unless you pay to promote your listing it's pretty much dead. I did try a promotion and that didn't seem to make any difference. I haven't tried Vinted as my DD has had a few bad experiences but maybe I should.

Supersimkin7 · 15/11/2024 20:37

Depends how good a shopper you are - if you wear everything out, no.

If like me you make the odd boo-boo Vinted is your friend. The key is: it adds up.

However, I can’t be arsed to get the true value or deal with greedy lunatics.

I suspect Vinted would be annoying if you took the site and your takings particularly seriously.

35Emma · 15/11/2024 20:39

I think it’s worth it for things that cost a lot to buy new. I just sold a Barbour jacket for £15 that was 6 years old but in very good condition. I’ve used that towards getting my teenager a Lyle & Scott jacket for £20 that would have been £110 new. I buy baby clothes cheap on there but don’t bother to sell them afterwards as it’s literally £1, if that, per item sometimes. I give them away instead.

Depends what you can be bothered with. I’ve probably made a few hundred pounds on there over the last couple of years and saved myself hundreds too, especially now my teen is into brands.

levantine · 15/11/2024 20:41

I agree that ebay is dead now. I used to buy loads there, but got out of the habit when vinted came along because it is so much less hassle. I have had some success with selling reasonably high end things on vinted, but lots of stuff stays on forever. It is increasingly not really worth it

StarDolphins · 15/11/2024 20:42

I don’t sell on EBay but I do on Vinted. I also buy on there so I just spend what I earn which feels worth it to me. Like swapping old clothes for new clothes! I don’t ever buy new clothes.

Pinkbendyman · 15/11/2024 20:42

I’ve made over £300 in the last few months on Vinted. Once you get the hang of it, it’s really easy. I always sell for a reasonable price as I just want to get rid of my old clothes as quickly as possible.

Meit · 15/11/2024 22:01

Do you start with something cheap to sell to practice? Years since I've used eBay

NeedToGetOutOfThisSomehow · 15/11/2024 22:09

I've done about £150 on vinted since june ish. All just kids stuff £2/3 it's usually just high street brands, Next, RI, H&M. The last lot I uploaded , I added 12 items, 11 sold that evening. It takes all of 10 min to bag it and print label and attach.
I do all at in post locker or yodel. As I'm not too restricted to post office opening times. Our yodel drop off shop is open until 10pm.

calishire · 18/11/2024 20:43

Another factor is - how easy is it for you to post? When I started I bought some parcel bags off Amazon as that makes it really quick to pack stuff. I don't have to look around for a bag or box to put stuff in. I also live in town so I can walk to an inpost locker in probably 2 minutes and a post office that does royal mail/evri/dpd in 5 which is also not far off my school run route. I had an order this morning and I posted it straight after school pick up. I imagine if you have to make a special trip to post it becomes increasingly not worth it!
