My partner gave our daughter a whole bottle of water direct from a spring?!

Please help. We went walking today at Dovedale and my partner told us it was
Safe to drink the water directly from the 🪨 …. So my ten year old daughter filled her bottle and drank the whole thing… I’m now reading online that unfiltered spring water can be full of bacteria and I am very worried !!! Does anyone have any advice ? Thanks !! She seems fine in herself atm

I'm sure she'd have vomited by now if it was bad, in all likelihood she'll be fine. Go to sleep!

Borris · 29/08/2024 23:37

Yeah she'll probably be fine

She'll probably be fine, if in doubt do what surfers do and drink a can of coke to kill any nasties!

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 29/08/2024 23:41

We used to collect it into crisp packets as little kids, when out walking in the Lake District, did us no harm. I wouldn't worry too much.

Synchronisedwitches · 29/08/2024 23:42

She will probably be fine. I'm a climber and I had to do that once before when we got lost for a few hours and ran out of water and water tablets!
I didn't suffer any ill effects whatsoever.
Granted I'm not a child... but it is generally OK to drink straight from springs, the higher up the better abd the rockier the better... obviously there's some risk and it's better to have sanitising tablets and even better to bring your own water... but generally uts not gonna do you much harm. Upset stomach if you are unlucky.

We used to take bottles to Malvern especially to collect the spring water as a treat

Timeforaglassofwine · 29/08/2024 23:49

We always do the Coke thing too @WonderingWanda, I was told to make sure it's full sugar, not diet.
Spring water in the Peaks won't have the sewerage issues experienced lower down, and if you are anywhere near Buxton, the locals used to actually fill bottles from a spring water tap in the town.
We bought my adventurous ds a Life Straw, so he can drink directly from outdoor water sources.

I have been drinking from mountain streams when out walking, my whole life, and never had an issue.I feel anything in rhe stream will be massively diluted by swiftly flowing water.
I wouldn't drink lower down below agricultural land where there may be chemical pollutants.

Can’t he drink out his cupped hand?

The straw filters it.

Life straws filter water!

PolaroidPrincess · 30/08/2024 08:18

Drank spring water from that area many times growing up. Never had any ill effects.

plasticmack · 30/08/2024 15:18

This is quite sad if you ask me.
I live in the back end of no-where on the continent, but my kids have always drunk flask-fulls of natural spring water, and swum in rivers and lakes. I've never once had to think about it.

I remember doing so in the lakes in the UK as a child too. Such a shame that you can't do this now without worry.

TheRealSlimShandy · 30/08/2024 15:23

I don’t want to scare you, but my mother ended up on a drip in hospital after a sip of around water (she was doing a tour and the guide suggested she tasted it).

while hopefully she will be fine, the posts suggesting it’s “fine” are not correct.

Stay away from any stream that flows through sheep grazing areas: liver fluke can be an issue

They still do fill containers of spring water in Buxton.

Ground water and spring water are not the same thing.

SummerSplashing · 30/08/2024 15:32

@Wiggleroomm

how has she been today??

TheCadoganArms · 30/08/2024 15:34

As an avid hill walker I have always drank out of springs. Tastes so much better then tap water and I have never had any issues.

Summatoruvva · 30/08/2024 15:35

Our village has a long tradition of collecting the natural well water for drinking with really ancient people filling old pop bottles to take home. It’s not particularly high ground and I’ve never heard of anybody getting ill.

Dolliesdisasterousdayout · 30/08/2024 15:39

We have our own spring in the garden which we drink sometimes if we can’t be bothered to come in. Family have joked that we should bottle it and sell it on a stall at the end of our track 😂

It was a typo - I mean spring water.

Plus they also bottle it and sell it.

We go to Lanjaron in Spain where there's natural springs all over the hills and we drink litres of the water every day while out walking and cycling and never had a problem.

It’s all very well until you find the dead sheep further upstream! We always drank from streams on childhood Lakes’ holidays.
