How to correctly measure feet - sitting ot standing?

As the title says, how do you correctly measure feet, is it sitting or standing?

DD went to Clarks and was measured at a 10 (previously 8.5) - I didn't feel her feet had grown but her shoes had broken...tried on several pairs of 10 - they were like flippers, asked for an opinion, the other staff member agreed that the 10 seemed too big and remeasured at 8.5!

I've bought my own measuring device (it may not be the most accurate but I can at least see if the number changes). Anyway, as my question states, how should her feet be measured? Sitting or standing?

Standing

I have a measuring thing from start rite and it appears to be a size too high every time. So annoying

Standing because when you stand your feet move slightly forward. When trying on shoe you should always check the space at the ends whilst standing.

Isn’t that to do with them rounding up EU measurements?

Yep I go by this with my measuring thing, but I’m pretty certain they’re always sat down when the shoe shop do it!

I work in a shop selling shoes, we’ve always done it standing up, my DS when went to Clark’s for school years ago also stood up….🤭

I'm glad there were some other confused people as well. It always made sense that it should be standing but it's not always been the case in the shop for us.

That's fine, I can measure her feet at home standing myself to get an idea before heading to the shops.

I thought it was sitting but with legs dangling (so like on the edge of the table?)

Now I'm concerned I've made this up.

To be fair I've never mis-measured them, using this method.

Standing, as it's how you will wear the shoes.
Don't be fooled by knowing your child's size as it will vary between brands and where is was made for as when converting EU/US sizes to UK sizes it's not an exact science!
Best way to tell is if possible remove the insole, get the child to stand on it, heel right to the back and there should be a fingers ( whoever's feet it is) width between the toes and the end of the insoles. Obviously kids can get away with a tiny bit more for growing space.
This also works for adults 😊

Standing.

And it's worth noting that feet tend to get bigger through the day so a morning measurement can be smaller than evening!

That's how they've always done my kids in Clarks in recent years. I've got the Clarks measure at home gauge and that's the instructions there too
