Smoking ban extension plan by the government

I want less smoking, indeed none of illegal substances at all. Not sure this is the most effective way to go about it, given the Boris Johnson approach to not following rules has taken hold, how it will ever be enforced.

Fines just lead to a risk based response (what is my chance of being caught), the police won't deal with most shop thefts so cannot see them really dealing with selling to those born after 2009, and some of what is a banned outdoors area will be vague in definition.

Outdoor smoking ban at pubs being considered, says PM

Health experts welcome plans but some pub owners and hospitality bosses warn of economic pain.

I hate smoking, absolutely despise it. But, I choose to stay away from places where smokers go, and I think this will cripple some businesses.
He says he’s doing it to reduce the burden on the NHS, well how about getting the legal system to come down hard on drugs, that are such a burden too. How about making alcohol illegal, and banning hobbies/sports that cause injuries too as they are a burden on the NHS too. How about banning driving as all those car/motorbike accidents are a burden too.

AmusedMaker · 30/08/2024 07:35

Agree with Dustylee

soupfiend · 30/08/2024 07:36

Im all for it, nothing worse than sitting on a nice terrace with a pub lunch and someone lighting up next to you. Ruins the fresh air. Horrible.

And that includes vapes.

CheeseWisely · 30/08/2024 07:41

Well if this is brought in it will be end for many many more pubs than we've already lost.

There's a strong correlation between the biggest spenders / most regular attendees of pubs and smoking.

It's all very well wanting to have a beer garden meal without smokers, but if the beer garden is no longer there then nobody wins.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 30/08/2024 07:41

I hate the fact that I can't have an al fresco lunch or drink on a nice day without some selfish person ruining it by lighting up a cigarette or puffing sickly smelling vapour everywhere.I wish they would just ban the sale of all of it.

Phase2 · 30/08/2024 07:41

I'm so pleased they are continuing with the legislation to ban sales to those born in 2009 onwards. It's a really positive and proactive piece of legislation and the damage smoking does is awful. Who knows with vapes over time but certainly there have been deaths linked to vaping. Just because other cultural norms are also harmful doesn't mean you can't start somewhere. My only concern with the extension to outdoor places is the unintended consequences and whether people will take chances in card with kids etc

Phase2 · 30/08/2024 07:41

*cars not cards

Dearg · 30/08/2024 07:46

I would rather they focus on eliminating all smoking from work situations. Such as primary school staff ( not specifically teachers) standing outside the school gates at breaks , smoking, then bringing that back into school; or carers puffing up in their cars before going in to see my elderly neighbour who needs oxygen. Or mortgage advisors who then sit with you in an enclosed space…
Just examples, and in no way picking on those professions, but examples from personal experience.

MouseofCommons · 30/08/2024 07:51

I just hope there'll be police fining all the smokers for littering their cigarettes outside the perimeter of the pub. I'm sick to death of picking up fag butt litter dropped by dirty idiots.

Flexibubble · 30/08/2024 07:54

The government makes a lot of money from tax on cigarettes, I'm sure they'll cripple us all with tax hikes on other things to make up for it though. I dislike smoking but feel like this is overstepping into weird territory personally, with the proposed pay per mile etc more and more of our lives are going to be controlled. Ew. Excited to hear his plans for stuff people actually want addressing such as knife crime, violence towards women and girls.

2dogsandabudgie · 30/08/2024 07:55

Obesity related illnesses cost the NHS far more. I thought Labour wanted the economy to grow, can't see that happening if businesses are going to close because of this ban.

As with the pensioners, an easy target.

Araminta1003 · 30/08/2024 07:56

Vaping is worse. The battery litter everywhere- the health hazards unknown and people including teens can’t even tell if they have had too much in one go. Plus the money goes overseas to Chinese companies. Ban vaping unless prescribed by the GP to quit smoking! That was the original intention - it’s out of control.

Lostsadandconfused · 30/08/2024 08:01

It’s been law in Australia for years. No smoking in food service areas, inside or out.

I’ve just come back from the UK and Europe and the level of smoking everywhere was quite shocking actually.

dreamingofsun · 30/08/2024 08:26

How come this wasnt in the manifesto? Its one of the first things they have announced, yet it wasnt in their plans pre-election.....presumably because they thought it might affect votes.

As others have said, if there is no pub garden because the pub has gone bust then you wont be enjoying the clean air.

I also find it slightly strange that the government allows the selling of a substance they are then trying to stop people from using.

LaPalmaLlama · 30/08/2024 08:35

I feel like it will be too hard to enforce and given that no one over the age of 14 now will ever be able to buy cigarettes tobacco smoking will likely just die out naturally within a few decades. Even now only about 13% of adults smoke tobacco which is lowest ever I think so it’s falling anyway. Likely that many of these people will still smoke- they’ll just go elsewhere to do it.

I feel like the benefits of banning it ( given enforcement problems and likelihood that the smokers will just smoke somewhere else) mean it’s not worth it.

justasking111 · 30/08/2024 08:40

I wouldn't like to see businesses with beer gardens fold. Not sure how it would be enforced.

Clearinguptheclutter · 30/08/2024 08:41

I’m generally in favour but I don’t want even more pubs to go bust

Banning purchase of cigarettes to young people I also favour however surely it’ll just lead to a black market

while in favour this really wouldn’t be at the top of my to do list if I were PM. If only because some difficult decisions will need to be made about where the replacement tax revenue will come from

Hopebridge · 30/08/2024 08:45

Tbh I don't understand why they can't have two areas so you can enjoy eating outside without smokers and vapers. Completely ruins it as a non smoker (also added in asthmatic so I just avoid being outside with the smoke).

I don't know how they will possibly stop people doing this especially vaping as it is quite discreet. It's going to be difficult for the pubs etc to control 😬

PathOfLeastResitance · 30/08/2024 08:45

I think it’s an excellent idea. Too many times I’ve been outside and then a smoker comes and ruins the experience. It’s a disgusting, smelly habit and for me, it is in the same socially unacceptable category as picking your nose and eating it.
The fact that it’s annoyed Farage is just an added bonus.

Honourspren · 30/08/2024 08:51

So they want pubs to enforce something within their own premises, damaging business, while at the same time doing absolutely sod all about the illegal substances openly smoked absolutely everywhere on the streets? And who will stick their necks out?

I mean, smoking is prohibited on buses, but no one enforces it and occasionally you get the delightful stink of weed on top - again, no one says or does a thing. Minimum wage workers in pubs are certainly not going to stick their necks out to deal with the earful or worse that will follow if they tried to enforce this.

Getting rid of the Winter Fuel Allowance wasn't in the Labour Manifesto either. What next?

00BonneMaman00 · 30/08/2024 09:00

Sounds like a great plan!

Maybe they could switch the internet off too whilst they are at it!

Prriorayingly · 30/08/2024 09:02

If it stops smokers from polluting the area outside my local hospital, I’m all for it.

Starlightstarbright3 · 30/08/2024 09:02

Teens are just vaping instead .. I wish they would address this . It’s smells vile .. my 17 year old gets it without issue .

it is not healthy and too easy to buy .

Beekeepingmum · 30/08/2024 09:04

All in favour here. The more we can do we reduce the social acceptance of smoking the better for society as a whole.
