Out of the blue email

I received an email from a school mum whom I knew about 10 years ago. Wouldn't say we were friends, did have coffee a couple of times, chatted at the school gate kind of thing. During the final year of school she suddenly stopped chatting or even just saying hello which I thought was really strange but then concluded that as the family was moving abroad she didn't really want to keep in contact with anyone as she was just 'passing through' and she hadnt really got on with most of the mums anyway.

Anyway I've suddenly received an email from her saying hi and also that she would wait for me to respond before she updated me on what they had all been up to 😳.
My initial thoughts are why now? When it was pretty clear she wanted nothing to do with anyone from the school then.
Why does she think I would be interested in an update?
Is it a hacked email?

If I responded it would be polite but then do I really want to open that door?
I guess my conflict is between do I just ignore or should I be polite and respond? 🤔

Totally mlm!

CautiousLurker · 30/08/2024 07:55

I get emails like this all the time from mothers who were on shared/circulated class lists from years ago. They’ve been hacked. Do not respond. Report as spam if you have that function in your mail, block and delete.

Blackberriesandcobwebs · 30/08/2024 08:01

Hacked, MLM or JW.

Let us know 🍿

CitronellaDeVille · 30/08/2024 08:32

I wondered if SHE had been in prison… or her DH, given her withdrawal and disappearance.

She might now be looking to re-establish her life.

How far away did they move, can you remember?

I would probably be curious / nosey… but then let communication lapse again, or block at the first sign of MLM or requests for anything.

She's prob had my email address from when we were all back at school as that's the email I used on the class list. She says Hi and my name says she not sure if I still use this email address but that if I do a big hello then goes on about waiting to hear back before updates.

The fact that she acknowledges that you may not still use that email seems to imply that she knows it’s been a long time, therefore more likely to be genuine I think

and yes @coolmum123 were ALL invested now.

If it is MLM you could MLM her back-say you'd been hoping she'd get in contact as you have some amazing products for her...

NoEscapingMe · 30/08/2024 11:03

She probably wants to show off how wonderful her new life is. Very odd. I'd give it a miss

Ooohh I am invested!

SummerSplashing · 30/08/2024 15:11

@coolmum123

i was going to suggest sending her a fresh email rather than replying to the one you received, but too late now.

its probably MLM or something, but curiosity would have got the better of me.

BeeCucumber · 30/08/2024 15:19

Invested. Thanks OP.

Witchbitch20 · 30/08/2024 15:25

Maybe something happened in that final year in school and she wants to explain?

Witness protection ?

Or it’s selling Aloe Vera.

lazzapazza · 30/08/2024 15:30

Ignore

magicmushrooms · 30/08/2024 15:38
  1. she wants something from you & has sent loads of these emails out to anyone in her address book. She wants to sell something or start a pyramid scheme etc.if you reply keep it brief, all good here etc

2). but it could easily be a scam to see whether your email address is genuine. More likely.

whats in it for you if you reply?

Is it possible that she's moving back from wherever the family moved to?

Otherwise, I agree MLM seems possible...

ruffler45 · 30/08/2024 17:03

Sounds like she wants to play "brag" - how her life is now much better than yours..

Ignore, sounds like the people who want to play "holiday brag", "oh yes we flew 1st class to [insert country/continent of choice] and paid for all the family to join us" Yawn....

WickWood · 30/08/2024 17:53

Glad you've replied, I couldn't resist!

BirthdayRainbow · 30/08/2024 17:57

Hacked? Really?

I messaged an old friend a while ago and said I won't say too much as wasn't sure if she still had this email. I got a reply and we exchanged news. We never fell out, just that she moved abroad and we are both busy. In fact, I'm going to email her now.

PullTheBricksDown · 30/08/2024 17:59

Marking place for the update. FWIW I'd have replied with just 'Hello!! How are you?' and said nothing else at all.

Boidont · 30/08/2024 18:00

I too fear an MLM! 😬

TooYoungToJoinGransnet · 29/08/2024 11:49

I received one of these from an old friend. The reason they hadn't been in contact for a very long time was because they'd died. I attended their funeral. I played along asking if it was hot down there and was surprised she had broadband, etc. Low and behold, about five messages in they had a wonderful opportunity...

You can't leave it there!

DaringlyDizzy · 03/09/2024 13:20

Did she reply?

Covered beautifully by Sarah Millican & an email from an old school bully.
