48 hours in Liverpool

I’m thinking of booking a spa hotel in the city centre for Sunday-Tuesday alone. I’ve never been to the city before, I love history and culture so keen to absorb all of this in. Any ideas on how to spend 48 hours in the city? Keen to feel I’m ‘getting away’ so would a visit to Crosby beach fit into this?

I’ve had a lot of stress recently with working hard for a new promotion at work, fell out with a best friend etc.

I'd absolutely recommend Crosby Beach, and wandering among the Gormleys while checking their barnacles and random attire always makes me happy. It's an easy journey there too.

In the city, I like the Tate and the Maritime Museum. Both take a while to explore fully.

If you like architecture, I'd check out the Philharmonic (pub, not orchestra). The building is fabulous, with mermaids to one side and mermen to the other. The toilets are a thing of beauty too.

I did a few days in Liverpool with our teens/young adults recently. Crosby beach is a definite place to visit! Beautiful!

If you like history the Western Approaches museum is a hidden gem. A secret underground bunker frozen in time! We throughly enjoyed it.

Crosby beach is only 15 minutes on the train from Liverpool and a five minute walk so easily added to your trip. You can get off at Waterloo and walk down to and then along the beach and get back on at Blundellsands and Crosby station. Or there's plenty of nice restaurants/cafes in the area if you wanted to stop for food - InsideNo4, 156 on College Road, Sesays on Bridge Road are all nice

Edited to say just be careful on the beach because there can be quicksand and people get caught out fairly regularly

If you’re a history buff, Western Approaches would interest you. Also, the Walker Art Gallery and the docks are all walkable from a city centre hotel, as is Chinatown. Don’t forget the Victoria Gallery, a 10m walk up Brownlow Hill and within the university precinct. It’s a museum and gallery that has great historical exhibits and is often overlooked.Bold Street is good for cafes and restaurants. The cathedrals are nearby and there’s a nice set of cafes etc near them on Hope Street. If you want to take in a show or like classical music, there are plenty of city centre venues. FACT cinema is also good and has a nice bar and cafe. Enjoy!

The Western approaches museum is good, as others have said. As are the other museums. Both Cathedras are worth a visit. Moose coffee does amazing pancakes.

Port Sunlight village is also only 20 mins from Liverpool by train and has a fascinating history if that might be your type of thing? It would be better in nice weather though!

Lots of great ideas here, thank you! If I arrive into Liverpool for 1pm on Sunday afternoon, would a walk around the city then maybe the maritime and slavery museum be a plan? Along with the other docks museums/galleries. I would then like to use the hotel spa facilities in the evening.
for Monday, is the port sunlight village and Crosby too much in one day? Then the cathederal/dinner on Monday evening and a Beatles tour on Tuesday morning. Does that sound realistic? So many fabulous ideas, thank you!

Port sunlight and Crosby beach are opposite ways from each other, so you could do them in the same day, just account for extra travel time.

Maybe you could visit Crosby beach on the Sunday when you arrive then the museums and port sunlight on the monday. This would save you travelling around so much in one day. Also there's so much to see in the museums and round the dock area you might not get it all done before they close on a Sunday whereas the beach is lovely at sunset so it won't matter if you there a bit later

There are two cathedrals- the catholic paddy’s wigwam which is modern and the Anglican one which is vast!
both worth a visit.

Yes definitely go to Crosby, it’s lovely place.

Ah, can see upthread it’s already planned!

A round trip on the Mersey ferry is worth it as well – 25 each way or 50 mins if you stay on and come straight back.

It’s worth hopping off to see Hamilton Square 5 mins from the ferry port (the Abbey is also nice if you have time, although as you’re limited on time maybe save that for another visit!). You can also get the train on to Port Sunlight from here.

Have fun OP!
