How can I get drinks to DH in hospital?

DH was taken into hospital last night with suspected severe gastroenteritis but it turns out he has an infected gallbladder that is being drained and treated with IV antibiotics.

He’s quite poorly and has got the most horrendous taste in his mouth and is craving soft drinks, but I can’t visit as we have a sick DD I can’t drag out of the house. Close friends are away etc. Staff have said they can’t add squash to the water (I know they have some on the children’s ward across the hall).

How can I get drinks to him? Will Deliveroo take stuff up to wards? His would I arrange that?

Any ideas welcome!

Yes, when I was in hospital I ordered deliveroo a lot 😂😂 they would leave it at ward reception, or a HCA would grab it. In pregnancy I was hospitalised for a month, I couldn't cope with the same food that long haha

I brought in my laptop and would eat pizza with netflix in my fluffy dressing gown 😂😂

When my DH was in hospital for this he wasn't even allowed anything except plain water for the first couple of days so it might be a waste of time even trying.

Ouch, your poor DH! Get him to check with the medical team that he’s okay to have soft drinks first of all, as he might make things worse if he drinks something that’s going to affect his gallbladder.

If he’s fine to have them, could you share the name of the hospital? I’m a nurse and would happily drop him a care package in if it’s the one I work at.

Is he on plain water only, there's no reason the staff can't make a jug of squash for patients if it's in the stock cupboard,

Do check first, DH was in hospital with gastro issues and on a special diet which included tea with no milk and water.

Thank-you all so much.

I finally managed to get through to the ward and spoke to a lovely nurse who says she can find him some orange or apple juice. This should sort him out for this evening and then tomorrow I will investigate ways of getting a bigger supply to him. Maybe Deliveroo groceries or something. I feel really bad not being able to run him stuff in but DD is too sick to go anywhere

@WetBandits What a kind offer, thanks so much, that’s a lovely thing to do for a stranger! He’s in Chelsea and Westminster but looks like he’s sorted for this evening thanks! Flowers

They may have orange and lemon squash on the wards and cartons of fruit juices. Lemon and Barley or Ribena is nice, there may be a local marks in the hospital who do cartons of different squashes , you could ask if they have a volunteer who could get it for him..

How's your husband, @HospitalMercyDash ?

My father in law has just been in hospital for the same reason, so i can understand how crappy you must both be feeling.

He seems a bit more with it today, but it's hard to tell, as he's still a bit confused and I've found it hard to get concrete info from the nurses. One said he has a perforated gallbladder, another has said he doesn't and that if he did, he'd be on ITU. Apparently we're still waiting on the surgical team to see him, according to the nurse and we might have more of a plan then, but DH thinks they've been round but he can't remember what they said..... Confused

I did manage to get a Deliveroo drop with drinks and snacks to him, so that's one weight off my mind.

Sorry to hear your father in law has had similar, @ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews . How is he now?

Getting different information from every nurse is infuriating.

You're vulnerable and need proper answers you can use to help your husband from a distance.
Bless your husband - I'm not surprised he can't remember anything!

And my fil is better now, thank you.
Not out of the woods, completely, because of a few reasons. But, he's getting there.

All the best, @HospitalMercyDash 💐

The nurses may be getting conflicting information and the doctors may still be waiting for a confirmed diagnosis, I would wait and ask to speak to the surgical team . I hope he feels better soon.

I was in with a severely infected gallbladder a few years ago when visitors weren't allowed into the hospital at all. After a day, once they'd got me on pain meds I was able to wander about between IV antibiotic doses. He may be able to make his way to the little shop and they usually have a couple of choices of squash.

InfoSecInTheCity · 31/08/2024 11:33

On the information side, I found they didn't really have a plan beyond a few hours, it was all about watching how I reacted to the antibiotics and whether I showed an improvement. On the 3rd day when I still had infection markers in the blood tests and still had a temperature they decided I needed the gallbladder out and I went to surgery that afternoon. Then i needed a drain because of all goop left behind by the infection so I was in for another 2 days till that dried up.
