Scammer knows my name aswell as my mob number

I've just had a call from a very unconvincing chap purporting to be from HSBC, who I do not bank with. Apparently somebody tried spending £400 on amazon with my card. They didn't. The plan was to get my card details under the guise of ordering me a new one.

I knew from the get go it was a scam. I get these every so often and my usual M.O (if I'm home and have anything better to do at the time) is to lead them on for as long as I can be bothered and then laugh at them.. or blow a whistle down the phone.

Usually the plonkers can't tell me what my name is but this one could.

It all fell apart for him when after 10 minutes I asked him to confirm what address he had on my file as I'd recently moved and can't remember if I informed the bank of a change of address.

I'm just wondering where they get peoples details from? He's not calling random numbers as he asked for me specifically.

Literally any phone book or online database?

It's possible there's been a data leak with one of your online accounts. Most accounts require a phone number and if your real name is associated with that account as well (e.g. Amazon or Facebook) that information can be sold to scammers.

You can check at https://haveibeenpwned.com/. If your email address has been involved in a data breach (my old email was involved in 5... I used to sign up to all kinds of shite as a teenager) be sure to change any associated passwords to reduce hacking risk.

Have I Been Pwned: Check if your email has been compromised in a data breach

Have I Been Pwned allows you to search across multiple data breaches to see if your email address or phone number has been compromised.

It's from a website you have ordered on that was a bit dodgey and has cookies.

No hits on the pwned website luckily.

If it's dodgy sites and cookies I'm thinking maybe Temu since I ordered some kitchen stuff on there 🤔
