Gas, ceramic or induction hob?

I’ve no idea

Induction.

IKEA do very good induction pans that are not too expensive. Some pans are labelled induction but are actually rubbish and don't heat properly. So for anyone who complains that induction is crap, get a new set of ikea pans.

fussychica · 29/08/2024 15:29

I had gas for 30 years said I'd never have anything else. Had a new kitchen in a very small space so wanted streamlined as possible. Went for induction. Definitely wouldn't go back to gas. Amazingly easy to keep clean. I've never used anything bar hot water dried with an ecloth.

LikeWeUsedToBe · 29/08/2024 15:59

Induction is good and easy to clean. But gas is way better to cook on imo

LoobyDoop2 · 29/08/2024 16:24

Induction by 100 miles. I moved from induction to gas when we moved house, and was so excited about having the proper chef’s choice of hob. For about five minutes. It’s less controllable. It doesn’t provide handy extra worktop space when you aren’t using it. Pans don’t balance neatly on the stand things, and make a horrible scraping noise when you move them around. I keep forgetting to turn the stupid things off and there’s no nice beep to remind me. I hate it.

NashvilleQueen · 29/08/2024 19:09

I once swore I would only use a gas job but I am an induction convert. They are safe and quick and easy.

EmmyPankhurst · 29/08/2024 19:12

Induction.

The shrieks about pans only apply if you have aluminium ones - stainless steel, or cast iron work no bother. My only casualty was my wok and cheapo frying pan. The 50 year old Le Creuset that was one of my aunt's wedding gifts and sat unused until I nicked it 20 years ago works brilliantly.

NotOnlyFedUpButAlso · 29/08/2024 19:23

Husband with pacemaker killed by jealous wife while he bent over the induction hob... hmmm, now there's an idea. For a book, I mean. Of course.

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 29/08/2024 19:28

Induction - Ive just had a new kitchen fitted and my hob has presets available for different things e.g. boiling, simmering etc.

SummerSplashing · 29/08/2024 19:31

Induction with a bit of resistance.

ceramic - just no.

gas - I hate they way the look, the cleaning, not being able to move pots around easily.

induction - easy to clean, less need to clean as able to regulate the temperature better. Extra work surface (protected) wilL turn
themselves off when you forget

however, I HATE that they turn themselves off when you lift the pot up. I know they come back on but it annoys me beyond reason!

im the same with cars! I could not have one that turns itself off at lights etc. it really really winds me up. It genuinely makes me anxious & angry.

biscuitcat · 29/08/2024 19:39

Definitely not ceramic!

I love cooking on gas, so that would be my choice - I find induction a bit soulless. But they're definitely easier to clean and good for bonus counter space when not in use, so also not a bad shout!

ToriTheStoryteller · 29/08/2024 19:39

For all those with induction hobs (which seems to be about 98% of respondents 😆), I'm sure I read on a thread a few months ago that they are easy to chip/damage, is that correct? We are a very clumsy family on the verge of replacing a kitchen so the bombproof-ness of surfaces, materials and equipment is high on my priority list!

BridgetJonesBigPants · 29/08/2024 19:41

Induction. But go gently if you use le creuset.

There was a thread about damaging induction in an airbnb

but I’m a clumsy person and had induction for about six years and no issues

Stirmish · 29/08/2024 19:46

I still have my ceramic hob which was put in 17 years ago and it's still going strong, no chips no scratches

It's always heated up really quickly

My DM had a really expensive induction hob put in to replace her gas hob and it chipped fairly quickly on the edge sadly

Once my hob dies on me I'll replace it with an induction hob

ToriTheStoryteller · 29/08/2024 19:52

That was it @Clearinguptheclutter , thank you! I'll have to have a think, I'd love induction but maybe I need to start a thread about best kitchen design tips from clumsy renovators.😂

I would luurrrrrrve to have wooden worktops but I know that this could never ever happen!

Smellz714 · 29/08/2024 20:14

Induction - but it has to be the hardwired version, plug in ones split the voltage between all four rings so you can only have one on max at any time.

allthelittleangelsriseupriseup · 29/08/2024 20:30

Induction, definitely.
Used to have gas, but when we had the kitchen ripped out last year and made suitable for me as I am disabled, we put in an Induction hob, mind you we went for a Neff. It's wonderful, will simmer ragout for 2hrs + without it catching and boil water faster than my kettle.
Would never go back to gas.
I'd second what the above poster said, has to be hard wired, not plug in.

BIWI · 29/08/2024 20:35

Pipsquiggle · 28/08/2024 20:39

I have had them all.
Induction hands down.
The only exception is if you are a professional chef but I guess you wouldn't be asking the question in that case

Raymond Blanc and Le Manoir aux Quat' Saisons chefs all use induction hobs!

hellofrommyothername · 29/08/2024 20:44

Gas is being phased out over the next decade isn’t it? I have it currently and like it but I probably wouldn’t put it in new now.

or have I misunderstood whatever that policy is

LovelyDaaling · 29/08/2024 20:45

I love my induction hob, wouldn't go back to gas.

But

a) gas hobs go on for years, induction hobs do break down and spares become obsolete.
b) people with pacemakers must avoid them.

Osco · 29/08/2024 20:47

Induction - no contest however some of our existing pans don’t work as too small for rings so we ended up cooking everything on smallest ring. That’s only downside. Not sure if our specific brand (Whirlpool) but rendered a lot of our existing pans worthless despite being induction suitable. Only suitable for smallest ring. Gas is a nightmare to clean and always looks dirty/greasy. Ceramic takes ages to heat/cool down. Induction is a dream to clean.

Lovelyview · 29/08/2024 20:49

Another vote for induction. Very fast and energy efficient. Ours sometimes switches itself off if a bit of water gets splashed on the control panel which is annoying.

minipie · 29/08/2024 20:50

Induction. I say this as an ex-gas hob lover.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 29/08/2024 20:57

Induction without a doubt. Easier to clean, easy to control, heats up instantly. Ours has a boost function which heats a pan of water from cold to boiling in about 90 seconds. Good keep warm option too. And looks sleeker than a gas hob.
