Botox for Migraine

I had medical botox done today after a hellish few years plagued with migraines. I'm trying not to be too hopeful in case it doesn't work. Could anyone share experiences? Just keen to hear from others as I don't know anyone in real life who's had this done. Thanks

I had this across the forehead, and have not had a migraine since. I have not needed to repeat it too often. I used to have migraines at least every 4-6 weeks. tension related . I actually recommended it to a complete stranger having a migraine on a plane. Not easy saying have you considered botox

Did it just kick in immediately?

Are you able to frown? 😂

Hi, I got persistent migraines after my ds was born, on average 4 a week, the rest of the time I still had an underlying dull headache.
The first time I got Botox did nothing - I since changed who I go to and it’s been BRILLIANT. 100% recommend to anyone. I do take other medications alongside the Botox, but I now average one a week and 2-3 days of dull headaches which is a massive improvement. It’s been life changing for me

Does it need to be a particular dose administered by a Dr or can you get it done anywhere? My migraines are getting worse & I'm losing work days so I'm seriously considering getting it done.

I had mine done at a migraine clinic with a specific doctor. I'm on NHS waiting list but its likely to be 6-12 months and I was desperate so I went privately

Yes I can frown -it's only done in top third of forehead. Botox can take up to 4 days to kick in. If your eyebrows feel heavy they have done it too low but can inject a corrective jab to raise the muscle.
I would always recommend a doctor to administer botox
Thing was after a few times the migraines went away. Obviously depends on your migraine triggers - but I was told I had stopped tensing the things that caused me tension headaches.
Still cannot eat blue cheese though- that is a knock down migraine for 3 days!

Breadcat24 · 28/08/2024 21:09

@RaspberryWhirls the first time I had it was 2001 which was before it was prescribed for migraines. I had it for horizontal forehead lines then had this wonderful side effect. note upper horizontal not 11s

bryceQ · 29/08/2024 15:46

Thanks mine weren't in the top third they were just above my eyebrows I think... Maybe the placement is different.

@bryceQ how are you

bryceQ · 01/09/2024 17:54

Mmmm I've still got headaches but waiting to see if it settles. I find the sensation in my head a bit unusual to get used to. My brother couldn't tell when I showed him. Just really hoping this is going to start to help. I've also started therapy

I’ve been having it done every 3 months for about 10 years. I can’t cope without it and I really notice it if it goes over the 3 months.

I have it done in the migraine clinic in the hospital, I have more injections than normal because she puts more in my shoulders due to tension there. It doesn’t stop the migraines but it reduces the severity and frequency of them. For example yesterday I had one sort of in the background but I took a couple of paracetamol and had a big drink and it went. If I hadn’t have had the Botox it would have become a full blown migraine and I’d have ended up in bed.
